FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College softball team (7-11, 2-4 CAC)
dropped both games of a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader to
the visiting York College (Pa.) Spartans (24-2, 5-1 CAC) Wednesday
by margins of 3-0 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap.
Heather Bormann and Brittany Therres launched solo homeruns in
the opener and Therres pitched a three-hit shutout for the
Spartans. Borman also drove in York's first run of the ballgame on
a base hit to left.
Hood's Bridgette Ringley was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles
while pinch-hitter Taylor Grimmell collected a single to center in
the bottom of the seventh. Casey Dunn was the only Blazer to
advance to third base after reaching on a Spartan fielding error,
but was stranded there after Therres retired Brittini Jones on a
strikeout and Jordan Wolford on a groundout.
In game two, Erin McNally put the Blazers up early when she
drove in Bridgette Ringley in the bottom of the second inning.
Ringley led off the frame with a double to the gap in left-center.
The Spartans responded though in the top of the third with a pair
of runs on three base hits. Meg Van Meter and Therres contributed
run-scoring hits in the rally. York tacked on another run in the
top of the fourth on an RBI-single up the middle by Michelle
Barwick.
Hood cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the sixth. Kelly
Gafner reached on a throwing error by Barwick to start things off.
Jacquie LeMar bunted Gafner over to second and after a groundout by
Erin McNally, Casey Dunn beat out a throw from second baseman
Brittany Schlorff, who bobbled the line drive. As Gafner rounded
third and headed for home, Schlorff fired home to try and cut off
the run but Gafner alertly slid under the tag for the Blazers'
second run of the game.
After keeping the Spartans off the board in the top of the
seventh, Hood had one final chance in the bottom of the frame.
Wolford laced a one-out base hit to left, and the potential
game-winning run stepped up in Grimmell. Wolford was forced at
second after Grimmell grounded into a fielder's choice, and Corinne
Majczan struck out Ringley to clinch the victory for York.
Dunn, McNally and Ringley all had multi-hit games for the
Blazers. Ringley took the loss, her fifth of the season, allowing
two earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
Hood looks to get back on the winning track Saturday at
Gallaudet University. The Bison and Blazers square off in a CAC
doubleheader beginning at noon.
