BRIDGEWATER, Va.--The Hood College softball team (0-2) dropped a
pair of decisions to the No. 13 Bridgewater College Eagles (2-2)
Saturday afternoon, falling 5-4 in the opener and 9-1 in five
innings in the nightcap.
In the opener, BC's Ashley Gills struck out the side in the top
of the first and the Eagles plated a pair of runs in the bottom
half of the frame. Angela Spinelli drove in both runs with a double
to the gap in right center to get the Eagles on the board.
Hood got one back in the top of the second. Rachael Potts led
off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a
sac bunt by Jordan Wolford. Potts then moved up to third following
a groundout by Bridgette Ringley and came around to score after
Kandie Glenn reached on an error by Gills.
After Ringley retired the side in order in the top of the
second, the Blazers knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the
third on another defensive miscue by the Eagles. Jacquie LeMar drew
a walk to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild
pitch. LeMar took third following a Casey Dunn groundout and scored
the game-tying run on an error by Spinelli off the bat of Brittni
Jones. Jones stole a pair of bases in the frame but was stranded at
third after Potts was retired on a fielder's choice.
After a scoreless fourth, Hood took its first lead of the
ballgame in the top of the fifth. Jones laced a two-out single to
leftcenter and came around to score after an RBI-double to
leftcenter by Erin McNally. But the Eagles responded with a run in
their half of the fifth on a sac fly by Spinelli.
Hood tacked on another run in the top of the sixth to regain a
4-3 lead. Wolford doubled and Ringley drew a walk to start things
off. After Sam Smith checked in to run for Wolford, Glenn bunted
her teammates around to put two Blazer baserunners in scoring
position with one out. Steph Gardner then pinch hit for Emalie
Stroup and drove in Smith on a groundout to third. But the Blazers
settled for just the one run as LeMar grounded out to third to end
the rally.
Bridgewater sent seven hitters to the plate in the bottom of the
sixth but the Blazers surrendered just one run. Sarah Heretick led
off with a single and advanced to second on a sac bunt. A pair of
defensive lapses by Hood led to the Eagle run but the Blazers
minimized the damage. Third baseman Brittany Sabol retired Hillary
Rees on an unassisted putout with two runners on to end the
Bridgewater threat.
McNally ignited a Blazer rally with a two-out single to start
the seventh. Potts then drew a walk and Wolford was hit by a pitch
to load the bases. But Gills retired Ringley on a groundout to
first to extinguish the rally.
In the bottom of the seventh with the score tied, Lauren
Childress doubled down the leftfield line and Spinelli walked to
put the first two runners on with nobody out. Both runners moved up
a base after a Blazer wild pitch. Relief pitcher McNally retired
the next two Eagle hitters on a popup and a groundout, but
surrendered back-to-back walks as Childress crossed the plate with
the game-winning run to give the Eagles their first win of the
season.
McNally was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Jones, Potts
and Wolford also singled in the losing cause. Ringley earned the
start and went five innings, allowing three runs on just one hit
with three walks and a strikeout. McNally took the tough-luck loss,
tossing 1.2 innings of relief and allowing two runs on three hits
with four walks.
Gills went the distance for Bridgewater and struck out seven
Hood batters while surrendering five hits and walking four.
In the nightcap, Jones drove in the Blazers' first run on a
fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the top of the third. But
Childress responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-run
triple for BC.
The Eagles broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth after
a five-hit, five-run inning. Amber Hoffman drove in two runs while
Childress, Cassie Thompson and Melanie Lamb also picked up RBIs in
the stanza.
Emily Morris gave the Eagles their second straight walk-off win
with a two-run homer over the rightfield fence in the bottom of the
fifth.
McNally went 2-for-3 while Dunn was 2-for-2 with a double for
the Blazers. Starter Wolford took the loss, allowing nine runs (six
earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and six walks. Heather
Jenkins earned the victory after giving up a single run on five
hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Hood hosts its first doubleheader of the season Friday against
Southern Virginia University beginning at 1 p.m.
