SALISBURY, MD.--The third-seeded Hood College softball team
(15-17) suffered an 8-1 setback at the hands of the top-seeded and
No. 10 Salisbury University Sea Gulls (27-2) Thursday afternoon in
the second round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament.
The Blazers saw their tournament run come to an end after this
defeat but still have four nonconference doubleheaders on the
docket in 2010. Salisbury meanwhile will serve as the host for this
weekend's tournament semifinals and championship. Second-seeded
York College (Pa.), fourth-seeded University of Mary Washington and
fifth-seeded Stevenson University will travel to Salisbury for the
remaining two days of the tournament Saturday and Sunday.
After failing the score in the top half of the first inning, the
Blazers allowed four runs in the bottom of the frame on two hits
and three errors. Michelle Gravdahl jacked a two-run homerun in the
frame for the Sea Gulls.
Kelly Waskewicz gave the hosts a 5-0 advantage in the bottom of
the second when she drove in Carly Read with a single down the
rightfield line.
After a scoreless third, Salisbury plated two more in the fourth
and and one in the sixth. Hood scored its lone run on the day in
the top of the fifth on an RBI-single by Rachael Potts which plated
Brittni Jones. The Blazers mustered just one more hit in the final
two innings, a single by Erin McNally in the seventh.
Bridgette Ringley made the start in the circle but lasted only
two-thirds of an inning and faced just six batters. Jordan Wolford
came in in relief and went the rest of the way, hurling over 100
pitches in the final 5.1 innings while picking up a pair of
strikeouts.
Hood returns to action Tuesday when the Blazers travel to future
CAC foe Frostburg State University for a 3:30 twinbill.
