GETTYSBURG, Pa.--The Hood College softball team (15-21) lost
both games of a nonconference doubleheader to the Gettysburg
College Bullets by scores of 6-1 and 10-9 Thursday afternoon at
Bobby Jones Field.
Gettysburg's Lanie Parr pitched six innings of two-hit ball in
the opener while the Bullets rallied to score an improbable 10 runs
in the final three innings to come back from an eight-run deficit
in the nightcap.
In game one, the Bullets batted around in the bottom of first
and plated four runs on five base hits. The Blazers got on the
board in the top of the third when shortstop Kandie Glenn belted
her first home run in a Hood uniform over the leftfield fence.
Gettysburg scored single runs in the third and fourth innings on
a sacrifice fly by Parr and an RBI-single by Catrina DelGais.
Taylor Snyder came in to work the seventh and retired the Blazer
bats in order to secure the win for the hosts.
Jordan Wolford suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs on
nine hits with five punchouts and four walks.
In the nightcap, the Blazers used an explosive seven-run fifth
inning to build an eight-run cushion heading into the bottom of the
fifth. Hood was one out away from salvaging a split in the series
before the Bullets rallied to score three runs to dash Hood's hopes
of a mercy-rule victory.
Gettysburg tacked on two more in the bottom of the sixth as
well, but the Blazers got one back in the top of the seventh on an
RBI-groundout by Taylor Grimmell.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bullets mounted a stunning
comeback, scoring five runs after the Blazers had already recorded
two outs.
After retiring the first batter, DelGais, on a groundout, relief
pitcher Wolford surrendered three consecutive singles to load the
bases. Second baseman Katie Lang then hit a grounder to Glenn at
short, who alertly fired home to nab Kara Kempski at the plate for
the second out.
The bases remained loaded and a defensive miscue by the Blazers
kept the inning alive. Grimmell was unable to handle a line drive
off the bat of Joy Hallfors, allowing Beth McCullough to score.
Next up was Megan Lott, who knocked in two runs with a single to
right, cutting the deficit to a single run, 9-8. Adrienne Rahs then
delivered the dagger, launching Wolford's 2-2 pitch to deep left
and off the wall to bring around Lott and Hallfors for the shocking
victory.
Brittni Jones had a bases-clearing double in Hood's big
seven-run inning while Erin McNally, Rachael Potts, Kelly Gafner
and Bridgette Ringley all drove in runs in the outburst. In
addition, McNally extended her hit streak to six games in a
row.
The Blazers seek to put an end to their eight-game slide
Saturday hosting Mt. Aloysius College Mounties in a nonconference
twinbill at 1 p.m.
