Box Score FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (4-4) won its
third match of the season on its home court of Gambrill Gym with a
3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-11, 25-19) over visiting Christendom College
(2-2) Friday night in a nonconference match.
The Blazers' three home victories are the most for Hood since
the 2005 campaign.
Hood used some strong serving in the first set to take command.
Trailing 8-7, Hood called a timeout and proceeded to gain the side
out on a hitting error by the Crusaders. Then senior Kristina Straub served up four straight aces to give the Blazers a 12-8
lead. Hood closed out the set on two kills by Kristan Hawkins and
two more aces by Straub.
The Blazers reeled off the first seven points of the second set
and kept the Crusaders at bay throughout the stanza, taking a 2-0
lead in the match with a 25-10 win. Hood hit .450 in the set,
collecting 10 kills on 20 attempts with just one error.
In set number three, the Crusaders hung around, rallying to tie
the set at 13-13 on a kill by Sarah Massett. But Hood outscored
Christendom 9-3 from that point to go up 22-16 and went on to
clinch the match on a thunderous kill by Straub to complete the
sweep.
Straub finished with a double-double of 10 kills and 10 aces,
both season-highs. Fellow senior Chelsea Weaver keyed the defense
with 15 digs while Ashley Beall and Morgan Huffer combined for 22
assists.
Hood returns to Capital Athletic Conference action Tuesday when
it travels to the University of Mary Washington for a 7 p.m.
match.
