Box Score FREDERICK, Md.--The Frostburg State University Bobcats (4-9, 1-2 CAC) scored the equalizer with five seconds remaining in regulation, then registered the golden goal with 1:44 left in the first overtime period to defeat the Hood College field hockey team (3-6, 0-3 CAC), 4-3 in overtime, in a Capital Athletic Conference contest Wednesday at Thomas Athletic Field.
Both squads entered the matchup in search of their first CAC wins of the season. Hood however had a bigger mission--to notch its first CAC win in program history since joining the conference in 2007.
After FSU's Amanda Lennon opened the scoring in the 11th minute with her first goal of the fall, Hood's Megan Cahill knocked home her team-leading fourth score of the season two minutes later to tie the score at 1-1. Frostburg regained the lead when Courtney Abell found the back of the cage in the 32nd minute, and the 2-1 score would stand at intermission.
Cahill set up teammate Chelsea Young in the 62nd minute as the Blazers drew even once again, 2-2. The goal was Young's first of her Blazer career. Then less than two minute later, Hood struck again as Morgan Cole tallied her second goal of the season in the 64th minute to give Hood its first lead of the afternoon, 3-2.
Hood called a timeout following the score to strategize the final 6:30 of regulation. Frostburg was relentless on attack, firing five shots in the closing minutes. Two attempts were saved by Hood keeper Ying Van Schaik, one was blocked by the Blazer defense and the fourth went wide, but with five seconds remaining on the clock, Alli Elliott snuck one past Van Schaik to deny the Blazers a win in regulation and the two squads went to a sudden-victory overtime period deadlocked at 3-3.
In the 7-v-7 extra session, the Bobcats outshot Hood 13-1. In the end it was Lennon who put the dagger in the hearts of the Blazer faithful in the 84th minute, her second goal of the game.
Van Schaik finished with 17 saves in a valiant effort while Maria Smith was also credited with a defensive save. Lost in the final margin was the fact that Cahill moved into a tie for fourth place in two categories, career goals (9) and career assists (7). She also jumped to fourth all-time in total points with 25.
The Blazers look to regroup for another CAC tilt with Wesley College Sunday at 1 p.m. at Thomas Athletic Field.
