Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va.--The Hood College softball team (0-2) dropped both games of a nonconference twinbill to the Bridgewater College Eagles (2-0) Saturday, 8-0 in five innings and 10-2 in six innings, in the Blazers' season opener.
BC's Heather Jenkins pitched four shutout innings, surrendering just one hit to earn her first victory of the season. Hood's Kelly Gafner tripled to center to lead off the top of the second inning to account for the Blazers' lone basehit on the day. She was stranded at third however as Jenkins retired the side in order.
Bridgewater plated two first innings runs on a passed ball and an RBI single by Angela Spinelli. Jenkins helped her own cause with a two-out solo homerun to left center in the bottom of the fourth. The Eagles clinched the win with a five-run fifth after registering only two basehits in the frame.
Bridgette Ringley tossed 4.2 innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Hood got on the board early with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Designated player Casey Dunn led off the game with a single to right and advanced to second on a sacrifice by shortstop Kandie Glenn. Dunn came around to score on a double by Gafner down the left field line. Second baseman Jacqueline Wenzel then plated Gafner on an infield single.
Bridgewater got one back in the bottom of the frame and limited the Blazers to just one basehit the rest of the way; catcher Deedra Hanley-Mathis singled through the left side in the top of the second and moved up to second base on a sacrifice by rightfielder Emalie Stroup. But Summer Ramsey struck out Ashley Brown swinging and got Dunn to pop up to second to end the threat. The Eagles then went on to score three in the fourth, two in the fifth and four more in the sixth to earn the sweep.
Ringley got the start once again and worked 5.1 innings. She fanned three batters and walked six while allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on nine basehits.
Hood returns to action Friday, March 4 at the two-day Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast tournament.
