Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla.--The Hood College softball team (1-9) came up on the short end of two decisions Tuesday, falling 16-7 to Skidmore College in six innings and 6-3 to Dubuque University at the Rebel Spring Games.
The first five Blazer batters in the lineup all drove in runs against Skidmore, led by sophomore Kandie Glenn's 3-for-4 effort at the plate.
After the Thoroughbreds posted five runs in the top of the fifth, including a three-run homerun by Katie Peverada, Hood got one back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-groundout by Glenn.
Skidmore put up another five-spot in the second to take a 10-1 lead. The Blazers retired the side in order in the top of the third on a pair of groundouts and a flyout, and responded with a three-run third on three base hits. Brianna Dyckman had a sacrifice fly and Kelly Gafner and Amy Hagerdon also drove in runs in the inning.
The Blazers cut the margin in half, 10-5, in the bottom of the fourth on a run-scoring single by Casey Dunn. Charlotte Evans singled in Skidmore's 11th run of the game in the top of the fifth. The Thoroughbreds would plate five more runs in the top of the sixth on four base hits and four defensive miscues by the Blazers to make it 16-5.
Hood's final two runs of the ballgame via a Jackie Wenzel sacrifice fly, which plated Ashley Brown and Emily Tempestilli, who scored on a wild pitch.
The Blazers then faced off against Dubuque for the second time in the tournament and got off to a good start, scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Gafner doubled in Hagerdon in the first and Emalie Stroup singled in Ringley in the second to put the Blazers on top, 2-0. But the Spartans took the lead in the bottom of the second using a six-run attack to plate three runs. Hood escaped further damage as the Spartans left the bases loaded when Susan Danielewski grounded out to end the rally.
After Hood came up empty in the third, Dubuque extended its lead to 5-2 with two more runs in its half of the stanza. Both teams failed to score in the fourth and fifth, but Dubuque's Laura Magana drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to make it 6-2.
Stroup ripped a one-out triple in the seventh and came in to score Hood's third run of the game on a wild pitch. But the Blazers would settle for just the three runs as Dubuque once again came out on top for the second day in a row.
Gafner and Stroup were both 3-for-3 at the plate, combining for all six Blazer hits on the day.
Hood will next square off against Farmingdale and William Paterson Wednesday.
