Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla.--The Hood College softball team (1-15) suffered a pair of defeats at the hands of Anderson University, 7-1, and Simpson College, 12-1 in six innings, Saturday at the Rebel Spring Games.
In the opener, Hood struck early with a run in the top of the first. After Amy Hagerdon cracked a two-out triple, Kelly Gafner singled her in to give the Blazers a quick 1-0 lead. The Ravens responded in their half of the frame. After loading the bases, Katie Lee came in to score on a defensive miscue by the Blazers.
After two scoreless innings, Anderson struck for three more in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Natalie Moorhouse. The Ravens tacked on one more in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the final margin. Hood's seventh inning rally was cut short; Brianna Dyckman and Casey Dunn led off the inning with back-to-back base hits, but Anderson's starter Devin Moorman got Kandie Glenn to ground into a double play and Hagerdon flied out to center to end the threat.
Dunn and Dyckman collected a pair of hits in the ballgame while Bridgette Ringley drew a pair of walks and singled in the sixth.
In game two, the Simpson Storm jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and held the Blazers to just four base hits on the day.
Dunn drove in Hood's lone run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth. Trailing 7-0, Jennifer Rutherford singled to get things started and advanced all the way to third on a pair of wild pitches by Storm hurler Allison Barloon. Dunn delivered the clutch base hit to plate Rutherford with two outs to get the Blazers on the board.
Anderson put the game out of reach in the sixth, scoring five more runs to earn the win.
Ringley started the game and tossed two innings, allowing three runs on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Rutherford worked the final four frames, surrendering nine runs on nine hits.
The Blazers begin Capital Athletic Conference play Thursday hosting the University of Mary Washington Eagles at 3 p.m. in a twinbill.
