Box Score 2 FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College softball team (3-17, 2-2 CAC) swept its first doubleheader this year and snapped a 13-game losing streak with wins over visiting Stevenson University (8-9, 0-4 CAC) Saturday afternoon, 9-5 and 5-3, at Thomas Athletic Field.
The Blazers started scoring early in the first game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first after sophomore Casey Dunn led off with a single up the middle. Dunn and fellow Blazer, sophomore Kandie Glenn, were smooth on the base paths as they each scored following a pair of Stevenson throwing errors. The Mustangs tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the third inning, but the Blazers answered with three more of their own in the bottom of the inning when senior Brittany Sabol homered to center field scoring Glenn and junior Kelly Gafner.
Hood continued its scoring frenzy in the fourth as freshman Jackie Wenzel got the inning started with a base hit to second. Dunn and Glenn added singles of their own and freshman Amy Hagerdon singled down the leftfield line scoring two, putting the Blazers up 8-2. Despite continued Mustang attempts, the Blazers maintained the advantage, tacked on another run in the sixth inning when Glenn scored on a throwing error, and held on to win game one, 9-5.
Hood came out equally as strong in game two when Dunn reached on a hit-by-pitch and Glenn walked. Both advanced with stolen bases and stacked the cards for Gafner who doubled to leftfield and tallied two RBIs. Sabol followed with a double of her own, scoring Gafner and putting the Blazers out front, 3-0. Stevenson finally made the scoreboard in the fifth as Sara DiMeglio went deep to left field, scoring two.
Stevenson made a pitching change in the bottom of the fifth, but the Blazers were not phased as Glenn and Dunn came in to score to make it 5-2 Hood. The Mustangs scored in the sixth inning but the damage was done and Hood held on to win, 5-3.
Senior Bridgette Ringley pitched both games for the Blazers, manning the circle for 14 straight innings and tallying seven strike outs. Dunn led the Blazers with three hits and Glenn, Sabol, and junior Emalie Stroup had two hits each. Sabol provided the Blazers with three RBIs and Gafner and Hagerdon each tallied two.
The Blazers hit the road Monday for another conference matchup against York College (Pa.) starting at 3 p.m. The twinbill was originally scheduled for Sunday but got pushed back a day due to the threat of inclement weather.
