Spartans Sweep Hood Softball, 6-1 & 8-5

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

YORK, Pa.--The Hood College softball team (3-19, 2-4 CAC) came up on the short end of both games of a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader to the York College (Pa.) Spartans (15-5, 4-0 CAC) by counts of 6-1 and 8-5 Monday.

In game one, senior Brittany Sabol scored the first run of the ballgame in the top of the second following an RBI-single by Jackie Wenzel. But the Spartans responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame on a base hit to left by Rachel Klein.

After three scoreless innings, the Spartans erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of longballs by Emma Erbig and Kerry Smith. After Klein and Michelle Barwick both walked, Erbig belted a three-run shot over the leftfield fence, her third dinger of the season. On the very next pitch, Smith went deep to push the York lead to 5-1. The Spartans tacked on their fifth run of the inning on a Blazer fielding error.

Hood was limited to just two singles in the final two innings as Spartan starter Brittany Therres went the distance and picked up her eighth pitching victory of the season.

Wenzel went 2-for-3 at the plate in the opener while Emalie Stroup, Amy Hagerdon, Kandie Glenn and Casey Dunn contributed one hit apiece.

In the nightcap, the Spartans took the early advantage in the bottom of the second on another solo homerun by Smith. The Blazers evened things up in the top of the third when Stroup crossed the plate following a bunt up the third base line by Glenn.

The Spartans once again put up a five-spot in the bottom of the third on four hits, highlighted by a bases-clearing double off the bat of Sarah Harris.

Hood cut the deficit to 6-2 in the fourth by virtue of a Spartan fielding error with the bases loaded. Sabol singled and Wenzel and Ringley both drew walks with two outs. Stroup then lined one to short but Erbig was unable to handle it and Sabol crossed the plate with Hood's second run. The Blazers would settle for the lone run however as Dunn skied out to right to retire the side.

York plated single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, but Hood put together a two-out tally in the seventh. Dunn doubled to the gap in left-center and advanced to third on a bunt by Glenn. Hagerdon drove in Dunn with a double to right-center and Gafner singled in Glenn to cut the deficit in half (8-4). Sabol collected her ninth RBI of the season with a single to left to keep the rally going. Wenzel was next up for Hood, representing the tying run, but Therres, who relieved starter Chelsea Bock in the fifth, retired her on strikes to seal the win for York.

The Blazers return home Wednesday to host Frostburg State University at 3 p.m. in a CAC doubleheader.
