Box Score FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College softball team (6-28) was eliminated from the Capital Athletic Conference playoffs Thursday by the sixth-seeded Stevenson University Mustangs (15-15-1) by a 2-0 margin at the Hood Softball Field.
Julianne Roper pitched a four-hit shutout as Stevenson avenged a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Blazers back in March.
Casey Dunn, Kandie Glenn, Emalie Stroup and Brianna Dyckman all registered singles for the Blazers, but Hood was unable to plate any of the seven baserunners they had on the day.
In the top of the third, Kristin Baione singled and Lisa Bilski and Sara Dimeglio drew walks to load the bases with two outs. With cleanup hitter Desirae Sullvian at the plate, starter Bridgette Ringley uncorked a pair of wild pitches, allowing Bilski and Baione to score. Ringley hauled in a popup by Sullivan to retire the side.
In the bottom of the fourth, Glenn singled and stole second to get into scoring position. Stroup worked a two-out walk to bring up Ringley, who hit the ball hard but right at Sullivan at third for to halt the threat.
The Mustangs put together another rally in the sixth when Lindsay Kuczak walked and Dimeglio doubled to the gap in left center to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Jennifer Rutherford came in to relieve Ringley and had the daunting task of facing Sullivan, the Mustangs' leader in base hits and batting average. But Rutherford got Sullivan to hit a comebacker right to her on the first pitch and she threw over to Kelly Gafner at first for the out. The next hitter Jessica Bandzwolek popped up to Glenn at short and Amanda Mittelstetter flied out to Amy Hagerdon in left and the Blazers escaped unscathed.
In the bottom of the sixth with two outs, Hood posted two more baserunners when Gafner walked and Stroup reached on a hard hit ball to the left of shortstop Bilski. But Ringley hit a 1-2 pitch right back to Roper to end the inning.
After a scoreless top of the seventh, Hood had one final chance to mount a rally. Brittany Sabol hit a rocket to Baione at second for the first out. Pinch hitter Katie Jenkins was plunked by Roper on a 2-1 pitch which brought up Jackie Wenzel. The left fielder was retired on a popup to Baione, leaving it up to leadoff hitter Dunn. The second baseman was unable to convert as she popped out to Bandzwolek at first and the Mustangs advanced to the semifinal round.
Ringley worked the first five innings and allowed only three hits while striking out two and walking three. Rutherford came in for the final two innings and retired six of the seven hitters she faced.
The Blazers' final doubleheader of the season is slated for Tuesday, April 19, against Wilson College at 3 p.m. when Hood will celebrate Senior Day and recognize the accomplishments of Ringley and Sabol.
