Box Score FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore Eric Diehl netted the golden goal with 27 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to propel the Hood College men's soccer team (1-0) to a dramatic 1-0 victory over visiting Goucher College (0-1) in the season opener for both schools.
Hood secured its first win over Goucher in seven all-time meetings and won its season opener for the first time since 2008. Ironically, that year the Blazers also defeated their first opponent of the season, La Roche College, 1-0 in double overtime.
Goucher's hopes at a buzzer-beating victory in the closing seconds of regulation were dashed when the Gophers were whistled for an offsides call. Elijah Lais appeared to notch the game-winner after his attempt found the back of the net, but the goal was waived off due to an offsides call, sending the game into overtime.
In the first extra session, Hood's Naseem Zietoon narrowly missed a score when his attempt trickled just wide of the post. Blazer goalkeeper Will Lane saved a pair of Gopher attempts within the first 2:52 of the second extra period to keep the draw intact. Senior captain Chris Mendez had a pair of tries as well but was unable to finish. However Mendez had a measure of redemption in the final minute when his pass to Diehl led to the game-clinching score as the Blazer bench erupted in jubilation.
The Blazers outshot the Gophers, 18-9, for the match and attempted five shots in the extra session to Goucher's two.
Lane was credited with five saves and notched his sixth career shutout.
The Blazers look to make it two in a row Saturday when they travel to La Roche for a 3 p.m. nonconference game.
