Box Score 2 FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (3-2) extended its winning streak to three with a pair of sweeps over McDaniel College (0-5) and Chatham University (1-6) Saturday at Gambrill Gymnasium.
Hood defeated the Green Terror in the opening match, 25-8, 25-18, 25-15. Alyssa Eshleman registered 11 of Hood's 28 kills in the match and Brittany Lethbridge finished with seven kills. Amy Hagerdon assisted on 21 Blazer kills to go along with nine digs and five aces. Hayley Rogers served up four aces and smacked four kills in addition to posting a pair of solo blocks. Keesha Fields Theresa Schwarzwalder and Eshleman all registered six digs while Anela Alic chipped in a pair of kills and a block.
Hood ripped off the first seven points of the first set and won going away, setting the tone for the match. The Blazers would the open up an 11-3 lead in the second set and took their largest lead of the frame, 20-9, on an ace by Hagerdon. But the Green Terror clawed back into it and closed to within 21-17 on a Blazer attack error. Hood managed to keep McDaniel at bay and went on to take the set, 25-18 on an ace by Morgan Huffer. Hood held the upperhand throughout the third set as well and cruised to a 25-15 win.
In the Blazers' second match of the day, they clashed with a former rival from the Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference, the Chatham Cougars. Hood notched its first win against the Cougars since the 2006 season in three sets, 25-16, 25-18, 25-21.
Hood collected 30 kills in the match as newcomer Ashley Park-Brouse stepped up with a team-high seven kills. Ashley Whaley tallied two kills and two digs while Rogers had six kills and four total blocks. Eshleman led a solid defensive effort by the Blazers with a team-high 16 digs while Schwarzwalder and Hagerdon dug out 10 balls apiece.
The first set featured four ties and five lead changes before the Blazers took control for good (9-8) on a solo block by Rogers. The Cougars put up a fight in the second set and midway through the period led 15-12, but the Blazers scored five straight points to assume a 17-15 lead and would not trail again in the set. Hood had to play catch-up in the third set as well, finding themselves in a 10-6 hole early on. Hood retook the lead, 11-10, on a kill by Park-Brouse. Chatham fought off six straight match points before misfiring on an attempt and the Blazers clinched the match, 25-21.
Hood opens Capital Athletic Conference play Wednesday at York College (Pa.) at 7 p.m.
