Box Score FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (5-5, 1-2 CAC) swept the visiting Wesley College Wolverines (1-12, 0-2 CAC) 25-19, 25-23, 25-13 for the program's first-ever Capital Athletic Conference victory Wednesday evening at Gambrill Gymnasium.
Hood ended a string of 34 straight CAC setbacks dating back to the 2007-08 season. The victory also avenged a five-set loss to the Wolverines from last season.
The Blazers and Wolverines traded points to start the first set. A kill by Hood's Brittany Lethbridge put the Blazers up 13-12 and gave the hosts a lead they would not relinquish. Later in the set, a Hayley Rogers kill made it 22-17 Hood, and the Wolverines called timeout. Hood finished off the set after an ace by Rogers and a kill by Ashley Park-Brouse, giving the Blazers a 25-19 win.
Hood held the upperhand for most of the second set but the Wolverines clawed back into it and eventually tied the set at 15-15 on an Alysha Brannan kill. From there, the Wolverines scored four of the next five points to go up 19-16. The Blazers rallied however and used a Wolverine attack error to knot things up at 20-20. After a pair of sideouts, Hood took advantage of another Wolverine miscue to take a 22-21 lead. Wesley responded again with a kill by Carle Ax to tie the score for the sixth time. Rogers smacked another kill and Wesley's Jessica Taylor hit one long to give the Blazers the set point. After a Wesley timeout, the Wolverines got the sideout on a Taylor kill but were unable to draw even again as Ax's next serve went long to give the set to the Blazers, 25-23.
Strong serving by Keesha Fields in the third set propelled the Blazers to an early edge. Fields served three aces, the last of which put Hood up 6-1 in the early going. The Blazers never looked back, keeping the Wolverines at bay to complete the sweep and record the historic victory.
Hood hosts another match Thursday night against regional rival Johns Hopkins University at 7 p.m.
