Box Score FREDERICK, Md.—The Hood College field hockey team (2-7, 0-2 Commonwealth) beat Bethany College (1-9) 7-1 in its annual breast cancer awareness game. In special pink uniforms for this game only Hood played inspired and passionately and came away with an impressive victory.
Hood started the game at a fast pace and one that Bethany was never able to really match. Sophomore Alysa Billeter got the Blazers on the board with a goal in the 16th minute. Billeter made a nice run and was fed by junior Chelsea Young for the goal. Hood got its next two goals from senior Megan Cahill. The goals were Cahill's third and fourth of the season and gave the Blazers momentum going into the half.
Senior Michelle Buhrman scored in the 44th minute off a corner that she hit strongly past Bethany goalkeeper Jacqueline Harrison. The Bison got on the board in the 47th minute off a goal from Danielle Maddex to make the game interesting. Hood answered the Bethany goal quickly with a Chelsea Young goal in the 53rd minute. Sophomore Morgan Cole picked up her team leading seventh goal off a nice deflection from freshman Anna Kate Smith's pass in the 57th minute. Senior Miriah Stone finished off the scoring for Hood with a quality shot in the 66th minute.
Junior Hood goalkeeper Ying Van Schaik started the game and made two saves on the afternoon. She was replaced in the 59th minute by sophomore Liz Decembrino and the two combined for the win. Bethany goalkeeper Jacqueline Harris was very busy as she faced numerous Blazer opportunities throughout the day, but performed admirably with 12 saves.
The Blazers had an offensive explosion with 29 shots on the game, while Bethany only accumulated four. Hood also had a staggering 21 penalty corners to Bethany's four. The seven Blazer goals were the most goals they scored in a game since their opening game this season and was the kind of offensive outburst the team needed to hopefully get back on the winning track.
The blue and grey have a quick turnaround as they place host to Arcadia University this Sunday in a big conference matchup. The game is a special one as Hood will be celebrating senior day before the game. The senior festivities will begin at approximately 12:45 p.m. with the game following at 1 p.m.
