Box Score DOVER, Del.--The sixth-seeded Hood College men's basketball team (16-10) knocked off the third-seeded Wesley College Wolverines (12-14), 85-69, Tuesday in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament at Wentworth Gymnasium.
Hood, which defeated Wesley in Dover for only the second time in the series and the first time since Jan. 12, 2008, won its first playoff game since the 2006-07 season and registered its second-highest scoring output of the season. Wesley, a CAC tournament finalist the last three years in a row, bowed out of the CAC tournament in the first round for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
The Blazers will next travel to second-seeded University of Mary Washington Thursday to take on the Eagles in the semifinal round at 8 p.m. UMW swept the Blazers in the regular season series and ended the Blazers' season last year in a CAC first-round matchup in Fredericksburg. The fourth-seeded Eagles defeated the fifth-seeded Blazers, 88-82.
Sophomore Cameron Cook was virtually unstoppable from downtown against the Wolverines, hitting 7-of-8 from three-point land and finishing with a game-high 27 points. His scoring effort was the highest by a Blazer in the CAC playoffs since Jesse Gutekunst pumped in 28 points in the 2007 CAC championship game versus Catholic. His seven threes were also a Hood single-game high in tournament play.
Hood had one of its most efficient opening stanzas of the season, hitting 17-of-33 from the field (.515) and 6-of-10 from behind the arc (.600). Wesley meanwhile misfired on all six of its three-point attempts and committed 15 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. Wesley came into tonight's game averaging only 15 turnovers per game, the second-fewest in the league, and the Blazers' tenacious defense forced that many in the opening period.
Cook buried all five of his triple tries in the first half to help stake Hood to a 41-27 halftime lead. Hood would not relinquish its double-figure lead in the second half and led by as many as 21 in the period.
Lavar Rich tallied 15 points in the win while Trey Quinn chipped in 10 and Ramon Smith netted nine points and eight boards. Justin Stone finished with five points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals while Brenden Straughn scored eight points and Justin Bowens contributed seven points and four rebounds off the bench.
Hood combined to shoot 57.4 percent from the field (31-of-54) and 71.4 percent from the foul line (15-of-21) on the night, both well above its season averages.
Reigning CAC player of the week Paul Reynolds led the Wolverines with 23 points while Chris Douglas had 16 and JJ Bryant netted 13.
