Box Score 1 BRIDGEWATER, Va.--Caity Battey and Brianna Dyckman belted solo homeruns for the Hood College softball team (0-2), but the Blazers lost both games of a nonconference twinbill to the Bridgewater College Eagles (2-0) Saturday afternoon by scores of 9-1 in five innings in the opener and 8-1 in the nightcap.
After a scoreless first inning in game one, Battey drilled a 1-2 offering from Heather Jenkins over the left-field fence to put the Blazers up 1-0. However the Eagles responded with a five-run bottom of the second, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple off the bat of Kasey Anderson. The Eagles tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer by Melanie Lamb and an RBI-single by Aven Thomas. Anderson knocked in the Eagles' ninth run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the eight-run rule.
Battey made her first collegiate start in the circle and worked 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on 11 base hits while striking out three and walking one.
Emalie Stroup collected a pair of singles while Casey Dunn went 1-for-3.
In game two, the Blazers found themselves in a 5-0 hole after three innings and were unable to get a runner past first base through the first four. But Dyckman got the Blazers on the board when she cranked a solo homer off relief pitcher Summer Ramsay to lead off the fifth. Hood's rally to add to its scoring was thwarted by the Eagles who got Liz Decembrino to ground into an inning-ending double play.
The Eagles scored three more times in the bottom of the sixth and Ramsey retired the Blazers in order in the sixth and seventh to complete the sweep.
Jennifer Rutherford started the game and worked the first two innings allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits while Alison Schuetz tossed the final four innings, surrendering five runs, two earned, on seven hits in her first appearance in the blue-and-grey.
Kelly Gafner collected a pair of hits while Dunn added another single for the Blazers.
Hood next travels to Virginia Beach next weekend for the Virginia Wesleyan College Blast at the Beach Tournament March 2-3.
