Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla.--The Hood College softball team (5-7) used a walk-off base hit by Kelly Gafner to come from behind and defeat Mt. Ida College, 4-3, but suffered a 9-3 setback to Macalester Thursday at the National Training Center Spring Games.
Gafner came up with the clutch two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to score Amy Hagerdon, who had singled, and Emalie Stroup, who reached on a dropped third strike. Caity Battey doubled in the Blazers' first run in the bottom of the fourth and Hagerdon drove in Brianna Dyckman with a single in the fifth.
Hagerdon went 3-for-4 in the game and scored twice while Battey also collected two hits. Jennifer Rutherford notched the win in the circle and picked up a pair of strikeouts along the way.
In the second game against Macalester, a six-run fourth inning by the Scots was the difference. Casey Dunn and Battey both had RBI-doubles in the bottom of the fourth and Battey scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 8-3, but Macalester's Amanda Knopf allowed just two Blazer base hits in the final three innings.
Dunn, Battey and Emalie Stroup all had multi-hit games. Battey took the loss but struck out four Scot hitters on the day.
The Blazers wrap up their spring break trip Friday when they take on Western Connecticut State at 5 p.m. and Bowdoin at 7 p.m.
