Box Score 2 SALISBURY, Md.--The Salisbury University Sea Gulls (17-5, 2-0 CAC), ranked No. 18 in NCAA Division III, swept a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader from the Hood College softball team (5-12, 0-2 CAC) Sunday, 9-0 (5 inn.) and 3-0, in the league-opening series for both schools.
The Sea Gull pitching staff limited the Blazer bats to just three basehits in the twinbill. Jackie Wenzel singled with two outs in the third inning of game one and Kelly Gafner singled in the first and Jackie Yurchak doubled in the fifth inning of game two.
In the opener, Salisbury plated eight runs combined in the first two innings and belted three homeruns in the ballgame. Caity Battey got the start and worked the first two innings, while Alison Schuetz allowed one earned run on two hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts in relief.
In game two, Jennifer Rutherford and the Blazer defense limited the Sea Gull hitters to just three runs on eight hits. Rutherford, who gave up single runs in the second, third and sixth, did not surrender a walk and struck out two Sea Gulls in the losing effort.
Heather Mills had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-6 with two homeruns, three RBI and four runs scored for Salisbury.
Hood continues CAC play Wednesday at the University of Mary Washington. First pitch of the twinbill is slated for 3 p.m.
