Box Score 2 FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College softball team (5-16, 0-6 CAC) lost both games of a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader to the York College (Pa.) Spartans (7-11, 4-2 CAC) by scores of 6-2 and 3-2 Friday afternoon in Hood's home opener.
Brianna Dyckman went 3-for-3 in the first game while Kelly Gafner and Emalie Stroup both registered doubles. Dyckman scored Hood's first run in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch while Gafner drove in Hood's second run with her two-bagger in the seventh.
York's cleanup hitter Jena Ruby collected three hits and knocked in three runs for the Spartans, who scored single runs in the second, third and fifth and three in the seventh.
Jennifer Rutherford took the loss, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits with one strikeout.
In game two, the Spartans broke through for three runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Brittany Therres.
The Blazers got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Amy Hagerdon and Casey Dunn lined back-to-back singles to lead off the frame. After Gafner reached on a fielder's choice to second, Hagerdon came around to score on a wild pitch. A base hit by Jackie Yurchak put runners at second and third with one out, and Gafner was awarded home following an illegal pitch by Cory Urkuski. Wenzel and Dyckman both followed with walks to load the bases with two outs. Starter Therres returned to the circle to face Alison Schuetz who popped up to short to end the threat.
Hood brought the potential game-winning run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. After a Gafner single, Yurchak reached on a fielder's choice to third, forcing Gafner at second. Kali Ball grounded out to second to move Yurchak into scoring position. But Therres retired Wenzel on a groundout to short to complete the sweep for Hood.
Gafner finished the second game with three hits while Dunn and Wenzel also had multi-hit games. Schuetz (0-2) gave up three runs on eight hits with one strikeout and two walks in the circle.
The Blazers return to action Sunday hosting CAC rival Wesley College at 1 p.m. for a twinbill.
