Box Score 1 CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.--The Hood College softball team (2-3) used a five-run sixth inning to defeat the Wilson College Phoenix (3-2), 6-4, Thursday afternoon in the opening game of a scheduled nonconference twinbill. The second game was suspended after two innings due to darkness.
Hood chalked up seven hits on the day by six different players, including a pair by Jackie Wenzel.
After a scoreless first inning, Wilson grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as the Blazers surrendered an unearned run. But Hood got that run back in the top of the third. Wenzel got things started with a single and advanced into scoring position after a miscue by the Phoenix leftfielder. Kali Ball moved Wenzel to third on a groundout to the right side and Wenzel came around to plate Hood's first run on an RBI-groundout by Amy Hagerdon.
Wilson tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Brianna Smith and Tara Fields both drove in runs for the Phoenix.
But Hood broke the game open in the top of the sixth on four base hits and one Wilson error. Brianna Dyckman drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-2 and Kelly Gafner scored the tying run on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jackie Yurchak. Taylor Grimmell knocked in Dyckman with a single for her first RBI of the season. Kali Ball delivered the big hit of the inning when she laced a two-run triple to give the Blazers a 6-3 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Blazers limited the Phoenix to a single run despite a five-hit rally. Three of the first four batters in the inning collected singles. Ashleen McCullough singled in Faith Ricker to cut the Blazer lead to 6-4. Hood's Caity Battey struck out Jennifer Gipe looking with the bases loaded to retire the side and squash the Wilson rally.
Reliever Nicole Musser retired the Blazers in order in the top of the seventh. In the bottom half, Fields singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and scampered to third on a groundout by Maggie Sipps. With the tying run at the plate, shortstop Ball took care of the final two Phoenix hitters as she hauled in a pop up by Ricker and gunned down Leigh Roche at first for the final out.
Battey picked up her first win in a Blazer uniform despite allowing 12 base hits. She also struck out three hitters and walked a pair.
Hood will spend its spring break in Clermont, Fla., at the National Training Center College Spring Games. The Blazers have 10 contests on the docket for the week-long trip.
