FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College softball team (8-31) came up short in its final twinbill of the season, falling to the McDaniel College Green Terror (22-10), 3-2 in game one and 5-1 in the nightcap Thursday afternoon.

In the opener, the Blazer bats were silenced for the first six innings but Hood nearly put together a game-winning rally in the bottom of the seventh. Backed with an early 2-0 lead after a half inning, McDaniel's Erinne Warrenfeltz retired the first 11 Blazer hitters before Emalie Stroup laced a two-out double to right field in the fourth to break up the perfect game.

Hood trailed 3-0 heading into the seventh but Katie Jenkins reached on a one-out single to start the rally. After Jackie Wenzel flied out, Kelly Gafner singled through the left side and Jennifer Rutherford drove in Jenkins with her first double of the season to the gap in left-center. Jackie Yurchak drove a base hit to left field, which plated Gafner, but in an attempt to stretch her single into a double, Yurchak was thrown out at second on a relay from the leftfielder, abruptly halting the Blazer comeback.

In the nightcap, McDaniel's Stacey Armacost limited the Blazers to four base hits and struck out eight batters in the game. Amy Hagerdon, Gafner, Stroup and Yurchak registered one hit apiece while Hagerdon scored Hood's lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch. Hood loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh on singles by Yurchak and Stroup and a walk by Liz Decembrino, but Kali Ball hit a scorcher right at leftfielder Lindsey Blohm, who made the catch and doubled off Decembrino at second to retire the side.

The Green Terror scored three in the third and two in the fifth on nine base hits. Starter Alison Schuetz struck out two batters in the setback.
