Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa.--The Hood College softball team (7-18) split a nonconference doubleheader with the Gettysburg College Bullets (12-9) Tuesday afternoon.
The Bullets registered a 9-0 win in six innings in game one but the Blazers plated six runs on 10 base hits to salvage a split in the nightcap, winning 6-3.
In game one, the Blazers only trailed 2-0 after four and a half innings, but the Bullets put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the sixth while limiting Hood to just three base hits in the ballgame. Amy Hagerdon went 2-for-2 with a walk and Kelly Gafner singled for the Blazers.
Gettysburg's Abby Ferguson hit a two-run homer while Joy Hallfors, Adrienne Rahs and Catrina DelGais all collected three hits to highlight the Bullets' effort at the plate.
In the nightcap, Hood's top three hitters in the lineup, Hagerdon, Gafner and Casey Dunn, combined for eight of Hood's 10 hits. The Blazers scored two in the first, two in the third and two in the fourth and kept the Bullets off the scoreboard for the first five innings.
Gafner drilled a two-run double to center to put the Blazers up 2-0 in the first and, in the third, laced her second triple of the season to rightfield which plated Hagerdon. The Blazers registered their fourth run of the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Caity Battey.
Then in the fourth, the Blazers plated two more runs on a pair of hits and a pair of Gettysburg fielding miscues. With two on and two out, Hagerdon singled to center and advanced to second after a misplay by Hallfors, allowing Liz Decembrino and Jackie Yurchak to score to make it 6-0 Hood.
After Gettysburg got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, the Blazers had to hold off a seventh-inning Bullet rally to clinch the win. With one out, pinch hitter Ferguson singled up the middle and scampered all the way to third after a Blazer fielding error. Ferguson scored on a base hit by Melissa Tighe, and Hallfors followed with a single and Rahs walked to load the bases, still with one out. The Blazers traded a run for an out by getting DelGais to ground out to Gafner at first. Hood retired Sam Bader on a groundout to Dunn at second to end the threat.
Jennifer Rutherford picked up her fourth win of the season in the circle and struck out three Gettysburg hitters in the complete-game victory.
Hood has a critical Capital Athletic Conference series coming up Friday at Stevenson University. First pitch of the doubleheader between the Blazers and Mustangs is slated for 3 p.m.
