Blazers Lose Heartbreaker 5-4 to Bryn Mawr

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md.—The Hood College field hockey team (1-3) was defeated by Bryn Mawr (4-1) 5-4 in a wildly entertaining game at Thomas Athletic Field. The Blazers came out red hot in the first half, but were unable to stave off a furious comeback by the Owls.

Hood started the game very strong as junior Chelsea Young got the Blazers on the scoreboard first with an impressive shot that beat Bryn Mawr goalkeeper Faith Westdorp. Just five minutes later Hood struck again as this time sophomore Morgan Cole fired home a goal that gave the Blazers a two goal advantage. It was Cole's fifth score of the season, which is a team high.

Hood wasted no time building its lead as the blue-and-grey struck again in the 15th minute off a nice give-and-go by junior Jamie Wingo and Cole that resulted in a third Blazer goal. Just over a minute later the Blazers capitalized on a corner that was played in by senior Miriah Stone and finished off by senior Michelle Buhrman. Hood seemed to have the game in control, however the Owls would prove to be very resilient and began to sneak back into the game.

Bryn Mawr got its first goal of the contest in the 23rd minute off a nice shot by Kara Jane O'Donnell. Rachel Kahelin and Ashley Arbuckle also scored late in the first half as Hood would wind up taking a 4-3 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Hood came out in the second half with plenty of energy, but was unable to negate the offensive prowess of Bryn Mawr and its leading attacker Madison Beckmann. Beckmann led Bryn Mawr in almost every offensive statistical category coming into the contest and Hood did a good job of limiting her in the first half, but had troubles in the second half. Beckmann scored a goal in the first minute of the second half as she swooped a nice shot past Hood goalkeeper Liz Decembrino. Beckmann would then score what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 40th minute when she slammed a powerful shot at the top of the crease past Decembrino.

The Blazers had a few other opportunities in the second half to get even, however all the tricks they pulled out of their sleeve could not get the ball into the back of the net. The Blazers were unable to salvage the rest of their shots and Bryn Mawr was fortunate to escape with the 5-4 victory.

Hood was outshot by the Owls 14-12 and Bryn Mawr also held an advantage in corners at 10-9. The combination of Decembrino and junior Ying Van Schaik made five saves on the afternoon while Westdorp stopped six Blazer attempts on the afternoon for the Owls.

Hood returns to action this Thursday when they hit the road for a clash with Frostburg State University. The game is set to begin at 5 p.m.
