Blazers Have Rally Fall Short Against Lycoming

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md. - Despite career-highs from Danni Medovich (Woodsboro, Md. / Walkersville) and Rachel Wiley (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) a rally by the Hood College women's basketball team fell just short as the Lycoming College Warriors hung on, 65-62, in Commonwealth Conference action this afternoon.

Medovich led all scorers with 19 points and grabbed five rebounds, Wiley added 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, and earned a double-double with 12 rebounds.

Lycoming's Julia Antonelli led the Warriors with 13 points, behind 6-of-8 shooting.

Wiley scored the first two buckets for Hood, and Medovich hit a three-pointer to give the Blazers the 7-5 lead at 15:51.

Medovich added a traditional three-point play after Rachel Kessler (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) added a free throw to extend the lead to 11-7 just over a minute later.

After Hood had its largest lead of the half at 14-9, Lycoming went on an 8-0 over the next five minutes to lead 18-14. Free throws by Medovich and Kessler cut the deficit to 18-17, but a 9-2 run gave the Warriors 27-19 lead with 5:36 remaining.

The first half ended with the Warriors up 34-24, led by Chelsea Henderson's eight points and Janelle Ziminski's seven points. Medovich had seven points and Kessler had six for the home team at the break.

Lycoming kept the momentum, keeping the Blazers at bay and answering every basket Hood scored, building a 12 point lead of 43-31 with 16:45 on the clock.

Led by Wiley and Brittney George (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) the Blazers climbed back within five, 45-40. Medovich added two free throws and Hood was only down 47-44 with 10:05 remaining.

Allie Appleby (Bel Air, Md. / C. Milton Wright) scored five of her six points in a row, capped by a three-pointer to get the Blazers within one at 54-53 with just under five minutes remaining in regulation.

Back-to-back baskets by Wiley gave the Blue and Grey a 57-56 lead with 2:56 on the clock. After the Warriors answered to take back the lead, Medovich hit a three-pointer at 2:27 and then hit two free throws at 2:12 to give the Blazers the 62-58 lead.

Lycoming scored the next seven points to take a 65-62 lead, and Hood had one last chance with six seconds left, but Appleby could not get a good shot off for the tie and the buzzer sounded with a loose ball scramble going on.

The Warriors had Ziminski (11), Henderson (11), and Ali Derr (10) in double digits to join Antonelli. Kessler added eight points for the Blazers.

Hood shot 24-35 from the free throw line, breaking the team BB&T Arena record of 21 set in 2012 against Washington Adventist.

The Blazers are off until December 11 when they travel to take on the Messiah College Falcons at 6 p.m.
