Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C.--The Hood College softball team (1-1) lost to William Peace College, 8-2, but rebounded to capture a walk-off 3-2 victory over Salem College Sunday at the Triangle Classic.
Saturday's games were washed out due to rain which forced Sunday's schedule to shuffle a bit. Hood ended up taking on one of the hosts, William Peace, in its season opener and traveled to Meredith College to face Salem later that afternoon.
Ashley Fourcade had a sensational collegiate debut, driving in all five of Hood's runs on the day. She had a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth in the game against Peace for Hood's only runs of the ballgame; then against Salem, she laced an RBI-single to left in the bottom of the first and won the game in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off two-run double. All in all, Fourcade batted .571 (4-for-7) with five RBI to start her Blazer career with a bang.
Alexa Sivic collected a pair of hits in her Blazer debut against Peace while Kali Ball and Casey Dunn also added base hits in defeat. Caity Battey earned the start in the circle against the Pacers, working 4.2 innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits. Jennifer Rutherford finished the game and allowed four runs (two earned) on two hits. Peace scored two in the third, two in the fifth and broke the game open with a four-run sixth.
Hood's Keerstie Robinson made her first collegiate start in the circle against Salem and after surrendering two first-inning runs, settled down and held the Spirits scoreless for the remainder of the game. In fact, Robinson thwarted Salem rallies in the second, third and fifth innings as she forced the Spirits to strand runners at third base each time.
After being limited to a single first-inning run in the game, Hood pulled out the triumphant victory in the bottom of the seventh. Katie Jenkins led off the frame with a single and Alexis Briscoe came in as a pinch runner. After a pair of infield popups, Carly Farr kept the inning alive with a two-out walk. Fourcade then stepped in and won the game with a two-bagger to right, giving Hood the dramatic 3-2 win.
Robinson pitched a complete game and allowed two earned runs on seven hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts to earn the win. Farr and Fourcade had multi-hit games while Dunn, Amy Hagerdon, Battey and Jenkins had one hit apiece.
The Blazers' home and Commonwealth Conference opener is slated for Friday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m. versus Elizabethtown College at the Hood Softball Field.
