Hood Softball Sweeps Elizabethtown in Commonwealth Opener, 4-1 and 8-6 in 9 Innings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FREDERICK, Md.--Freshman Alexa Sivic belted three home runs to lead the Hood College softball team (3-1, 2-0 Commonwealth) to a Commonwealth Conference sweep over the visiting Elizabethtown College Blue Jays (0-2, 0-2 Commonwealth) Friday afternoon in Hood's Commonwealth debut.

Hood won the first game, 4-1, and came-from behind to defeat the Blue Jays in walk-off fashion, 8-6 in nine innings in the nightcap. The Blue Jays, who made the conference playoffs last season, were picked to finish fourth in the Commonwealth Preseason Coaches Poll, while Hood, one of two newcomers to the league, was selected 10th.

In game one, after a perfect top of the first for Hood starter Keerstie Robinson, the Blazers took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. Etown got one back in the third on a solo home run by Whitney Breneman, but the Blazers countered in the bottom half when Sivic took starter Laura Tomasetti deep for her first collegiate home run to make it 3-1 Hood. Carly Farr gave the Blazers an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth on a bases-loaded groundout which plated Jackie Wenzel.

The Blazers quelled a Blue Jay rally in the top of the seventh after Amanda Sheckard drew a one-out walk and Courtney Comstock singled to bring the tying run to the plate. Breneman advanced the runners to second and third on a comebacker to Robinson, but Casey Dunn squeezed a pop up by Lindsey Cooper to retire the side and clinch the win for Hood.

Dunn and Wenzel both collected two base hits for Hood while Robinson worked all seven innings and earned her second win in the blue-and-grey.

The nightcap of the twinbill featured plenty of offense and the Blazers ended up sealing the deal just as dusk was setting in. Etown drew first blood this time as Cooper and Elly McCarthy drove in runs for the Blue Jays in the top of the first. The Blue Jays added another run in the top of the sixth following two throwing errors by the Blazers.

Hood was limited to just two base hits over the first five innings but that all changed in the bottom of the sixth. In an unprecedented display of power, Carly Farr, Ashley Fourcade and Sivic jacked back-to-back-to-back long balls to tie the game at 3-3. Liz Decembrino delivered a run-scoring single to left which plated Kali Ball to give Hood the 4-3 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

The Blue Jays scratched out a run when Jessica White singled in pinch runner Shannon Deck from second to tie things up. In the bottom half, Amy Hagerdon singled to the gap in right center and Farr followed by reaching on a fielder's choice to short, which retired Hagerdon. Fourcade then stepped in and hit a sharp liner right at shortstop Cooper, who doubled off Farr at first to abruptly thwart the rally, and the two teams headed to extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth, Etown registered a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the ninth to go up 6-4. White drove in both runs with a single up the middle that Ball just got a glove on at short, allowing McCarthy and Cooper to score the go-ahead runs.

As Hood came to bat, the umpires declared that this would be the final inning no matter what, as visibility was waning for everyone involved. Dunn led off the frame with a single and Hagerdon reached on a fielder's choice after an overthrow by third baseman McCarthy. Dunn came around to score on the play. After a strikeout by Farr, Hagerdon, who represented the tying run, stole third and scored on a single through the left side by Fourcade to tie the game at 6-6. Sivic then stepped in and blasted the walk-off two-run homer over the centerfield fence and was mobbed at home plate by her teammates in jubilation.

Robinson earned the win once again in the circle after going the distance and collecting three strikeouts while not allowing a walk. Kelli Krause went the distance as well for Etown but was the tough-luck loser after striking out 14 Blazer hitters in the game.

Hood will have next week off to prepare for the National Training Center Games in Clermont Florida the week of March 10-15. Hood will begin the trip with matchups against MacMurray at 3 p.m. and Finlandia at 5 p.m.
