Softball Wins Twice Versus Becker, 7-4, and St. Lawrence, 10-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla.--The Hood College softball team (7-3) picked up two victories Thursday against Becker College, 7-4, and St. Lawrence University, 10-0 in six innings, at the National Training Center Spring Games.

In game one versus Becker, Hood used a four-run fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie and held off a seventh-inning rally to earn the win. Becker jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the first via a single, two illegal pitches and a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Talan Barron. Hood responded with a run of its own in the bottom half when Casey Dunn singled to center and stole second to get into scoring position. Amy Hagerdon then followed with a base hit to left and Dunn came around to score after an errant cut-off throw by the leftfielder Jaclyn Orangio.

Hood plated single runs in the third and fourth thanks to a double steal by Dunn and Jennifer Rutherford and an RBI-double to the fence in right-center by Katie Jenkins, making it 3-1 Hood after four.

The Hawks pulled even in the top of the fifth when Barron laced a double into center that brought around two runs, but Rutherford got the cleanup hitter Megan Cordon to fly out to Carly Farr in center to retire the side.

The Blazers batted around in their half of the fifth, stringing together five hits and scoring four runs. Hagerdon singled up the middle and Farr doubled down the leftfield line to start things off. Ashley Fourcade then cranked one to straight away centerfield that was inches away from going out, but the ball hit off the top of the fence for a stand-up triple, which scored Hagerdon and Farr. Alexa Sivic kept the rally going with an RBI-single to center. Kali Ball reached on a fielder's choice and later came around to score Hood's seventh run of the game on an RBI-single by Rutherford.

After a scoreless sixth, the Hawks got the tying run to the plate twice in the top of the seventh, but Hood managed to escape trouble. Orangio singled with one out and Lydia St. Laurent reached on an errant throw by Ball at short, putting runners on second and third. Barron then stroked a double to left that plated Orangio. However Rutherford got the next two hitters to ground out to third as Fourcade made nice snags on two sharply hit balls to secure the victory.

Rutherford improved to 3-0 in the circle and picked up four strikeouts without allowing a walk while Farr went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

In the nightcap versus the Saints, all nine hitters in the Blazer lineup either collected a hit or scored a run. Hagerdon drove in five runs and collected a single, a triple and a pair of sacrifices while Fourcade added two more doubles to her tally which now stands at a team-best six on the season. Fourcade has now hit safely in all 10 games and is batting an even .500 on the season.

Jackie Wenzel drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left and laid down two beautiful bunts in the game. The first was a sacrifice bunt to third that led to Hood's first run in the third inning then, on her next plate appearance, she beat out the second one for a single and later came around to score as part of a three-run fifth inning.

Hood sent 11 hitters to the plate in the sixth inning and scored six times despite registering just four base hits.

Keerstie Robinson kept the Saints at bay from start to finish and did not allow a base runner past second base. She scattered six hits, all singles, and struck out two hitters while walking one in the shutout victory.

Hood wraps up its spring break trip Friday against Wesleyan (Conn.) at 9 a.m. and Thomas (Me.) at 1 p.m. Hood is one victory away from matching its win total from the 2012 season.
