Softball Splits With Penn State-Mont Alto

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FREDERICK, Md.--Keerstie Robinson pitched a six-hit shutout in the opener and Katie Jenkins had a two-run single in the nightcap as the Hood College softball team (17-10) split a nonconference twinbill with the Penn State-Mont Alto Nittany Lions (6-2) Wednesday.

Hood edged the Nittany Lions, 1-0, in the opener and came up just short in the nightcap, falling 4-3.

Robinson chalked up her 10th win of the season and third shutout by scattering three singles and striking out five Nittany Lion hitters. The Blazers were limited to just six base hits themselves, but scratched out a run in the bottom of the third when Carly Farr singled in Casey Dunn with a base hit to left-center. That proved to be all Robinson needed as she did not allow a Mont Alto base runner past second after the second inning.

Dunn extended her hit streak to 12 in a row and logged her 11th multi-hit game of the spring with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. Fourcade, Kali Ball and Katie Jenkins also had hits in the Blazer win.

In the nightcap, Hood came inches away from completing a come-from-behind win and earning the series sweep. After Mont Alto went up 2-0 in the third, Hood plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single by Jenkins and an RBI-single by Jennifer Rutherford to take a 3-2 lead.

Mont Alto tied things up in the top of the fifth when Diamond Byers registered a two-out base hit to center which brought around Kristyan Gates from second. After a scoreless sixth, Byers notched a clutch base hit again when she doubled in Sara Rebar for the go-ahead run, again with two outs. Rutherford fanned Alicia Morgan to retire the side.

In the bottom of the seventh, Ball ripped a two-out double down the leftfield line and Fourcade stepped in representing the winning run. Hood's cleanup hitter crushed a towering fly ball to straightaway centerfield which looked like it might go out, but Mont Alto centerfielder Mackenzie Trafka made an incredible running grab just in front of the fence in the deepest part of the park to clinch the narrow win for the Nittany Lions.

The Blazers have a pair of Commonwealth Conference doubleheaders on the slate for this weekend. Hood heads to Alvernia University Saturday at 1 p.m. before returning home to host Lycoming College Sunday at noon.
