Box Score 2 FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College softball team (20-15, 8-7 Commonwealth) swept a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader from the Widener University Pride (16-18, 6-10 Commonwealth) by scores of 8-0 in six innings and 4-3 in eight innings Sunday afternoon at the Hood Softball Field.
The sweep was particularly memorable for Hood's lone senior, Casey Dunn, who was honored prior to the opener. Dunn drilled her first home run in a Blazer uniform in the fourth inning of game one to highlight a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, and made two sparkling defensive plays in the nightcap, which the Blazers went on to win in extra innings.
Hood has now registered eight walk-offs wins this season, either by run-rule or in extra innings.
In the opener, Hood staked starter Keerstie Robinson to a 5-0 lead by batting around and picking up six singles in the bottom of the second. Jackie Wenzel, Dunn, Amy Hagerdon and Carly Farr all drove in runs in the frame.
Dunn's round-tripper with one out in the sixth made it 6-0, then Jackie Yurchak led off the fifth with her fourth homer of the season, a solo shot over the left field fence. Hood won the game in the bottom of the sixth when Wenzel drew a bases-loaded walk for the run-rule victory.
Robinson picked up her fourth shutout of the season and first against a Commonwealth opponent after limiting the Pride to six hits, all singles, and one walk while striking out two.
In game two, Hood got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Hagerdon and Farr both singled in runs for the Blazers. However, the Pride sent the heart of the order up to the plate in the top of the sixth and rallied for three runs to take their first lead of the day.
The Blazers didn't fold and rallied to extend the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Yurchak led off the inning with a double to the gap in left-center and after Jennifer Rutherford popped up to the third baseman on a bunt attempt, Wenzel tied things up with a double to left-center. Then, Dunn laced what appeared to be the game-winning hit to centerfield, but Widener centerfielder Alie Alkins made a tremendous running catch on the sinking line drive and alertly threw the ball to second base to double off Wenzel and force extras.
Robinson, who valiantly ended up pitching all 14 innings of the doubleheader, retired the Pride's 4-5-6 hitters in order in the top of the eighth. In the Blazers' half of the inning with one out, Farr singled to center and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Ashley Fourcade then drove a 1-0 pitch into the gap in left-center which scored Farr easily for the walk-off win.
Robinson improved to 12-9 in the circle and 6-5 versus Commonwealth foes.
Hood has won 20 games for the third time in program history and for the first time since the 2006 season (27 - 2006; 21 - 2003). In addition, with two more dingers in today's opener, the Blazers broke the single-season home run record. Hood now has 18 long balls on the season, surpassing the previous record of 17 from the 2006 campaign.
Hood currently sits in fourth place in the Commonwealth standings with three league games remaining. The Blazers will make up the second game of the Arcadia doubleheader from March 29 this week before hosting Stevenson University Saturday at noon in the regular season finale. The top five teams make the conference playoffs, which begin on May 3.
