Top-Seeded Dutchmen Down Fourth-Seeded Hood, 2-0

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa.--The fourth-seeded Hood College softball team (23-17) suffered a narrow 2-0 setback at the hands of the top-seeded Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen (30-5-1) Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Commonwealth Conference tournament held at the LVC Softball Park.

Commonwealth pitcher of the year Sam Derr tossed a two-hit shutout and took a perfect game into the fifth inning. Ashley Fourcade led off the fifth inning by drilling a hard single to left field to break up Derr's perfection and Jackie Wenzel reached on an infield single with two outs in the top of the sixth to account for Hood's only base runners of the afternoon.

The Dutchmen registered single runs in the first and third innings, one on a fielder's choice and the other on an RBI-single by Allie Hartman, which proved to be enough for Derr, who recorded her 20th victory of the season. Hood minimized the damage on more than one occasion however, working out of bases-loaded jams in the fourth and sixth innings.

The Blazers will face an all-too-familiar foe in the Stevenson University Mustangs Saturday in an elimination game at 1 p.m. The Mustangs eliminated the third-seeded Messiah College Falcons, winning 2-1 in nine innings, in Friday's final first-round matchup. Hood is 2-1 this season versus Stevenson; the Blazers and Mustangs split the regular-season series on April 27 at Hood but the Blazers managed to knock off Stevenson, 5-1, in playoff action from earlier today.
