Box Score ANNVILLE, Pa.--The fourth-seeded Hood College softball team (23-18) belted three home runs Saturday but came up on the short end of a 13-6 decision to the fifth-seeded Stevenson University Mustangs (21-20) in an elimination game at the Commonwealth Conference tournament hosted by Lebanon Valley College.
Alexa Sivic cranked her fifth home run of the season in the second, a two-run shot, Jackie Yurchak launched a three-run shot in the fourth, her fifth as well, and Ashley Fourcade sent a solo bomb over the leftfield fence in the sixth for her fourth round-tripper of the year to account for all six Blazer runs on the day.
The Mustangs took command early, plating five runs in the top of the first and three more in the second to stake starter Stephanie Shupe to an 8-0 lead. The Blazers got two back in the bottom of the second on Sivic's blast, but the Mustangs struck again in the top of the third when Molly Hoyt singled in Kristin Mueller from second.
In Hood's half of the fourth with one out, Fourcade reached on a Mustang throwing error and Sivic, after fouling off four pitches on a 3-2 count, drew a two-out walk to set the table for Yurchak. Yurchak took Shupe deep on the second pitch she saw to pull the Blazers to within four, 9-5.
Stevenson had another big inning in the fifth as the Mustangs batted around and tacked on three more runs on four base hits and a pair of Blazer defensive miscues. Hood trailed 13-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth and needed to score at least one run to extend the game. Fourcade answered the call with authority, sending a 1-1 pitch from Briana Pichalski deep to left to make it 13-6. Kali Ball and Yurchak followed with singles in the stanza but were stranded after Pichalski retired the next two Blazers on a pop up to third and a fly ball to left.
After setting down the Mustangs in order in the top of the seventh, Hood needed a huge rally to extend their historic playoff run, and Casey Dunn started things off on the right foot. She lined a base hit back up the middle and advanced into scoring position after a wild pitch. But the rally stalled there, as the Mustangs closed things out by setting down Hood's 2-3-4 hitters on a strikeout and pair of fly-ball outs.
The Blazers set numerous school records this spring, including team records for home runs (22) and team ERA (3.09). Hood's 23 victories are the second-most in program history. Amy Hagerdon finished second on Hood's single-season chart in base hits (50) while Fourcade sits in second place in RBI (35) and doubles (15). Dunn also concluded her spectacular Hood career with the second-most base hits of anyone to wear a Blazer uniform (154), trailing all-time leader Sara Wastler by just five.
