Blazers Outlast Alvernia for First Commonwealth Victory

READING, Pa. - Hood College closed out the decisive fifth set with a 12-4 run to outlast Alvernia for the Blazers first win in Commonwealth Conference play.

The two teams traded wins in each of the first four sets. Hood took set one 28-26, before the Crusaders notched a 25-18 win in the second set to tie the match. The Blazers jumped ahead 2-1 with a 27-25 victory in the third set. Alvernia pushed things to a fifth set with a 25-20 win in set four before Hood rallied for a 15-6 win in the final set.

Kathryn Jones notched her third career-high of the season with 37 assists, the fourth-highest single match total in school history. She added a career-high 20 digs for her third consecutive double-double and also had three blocks.

Hayley Rogers led the team with 16 kills and hit .308 for the match. Her nine blocks were a career-high and tied the eighth-best match in the Blazer record book. Four of Rogers' blocks were solos.

Addie Roop turned in a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs. 

Four other players reached double digits in digs, as well, as Hood tallied 106 on the night, the fifth most in a single match in school history.

Morgan Huffer had 18 digs and served up four aces. Erin Botker had 15 digs, two aces and a pair of blocks. Amy Hagerdon and Keesha Field added 10 digs apiece.

Hood led 23-10 in the first set, but the Crusaders rallied to tie the score at 24-24. The score was tied at 26-26 before an Alvernia attack error and a kill by Rogers gave Hood the win.

Alvernia stayed close to the Blazers in the third set and tied the score at 24-24. Rogers later gave Hood a 26-25 lead and an attack error by the Crusaders gave Hood another set victory.

In the fifth set, Hood hit 7-of-16 and had a perfect 6-of-6 sideout percentage. Fields started Hood's run with a kill to make it 4-2 early on and Huffer served up a pair of aces for the final two points of the match.

Hood will look to start a win streak when the Blazers travel to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to take on St. Mary's (Md.) and Ursinus on September 14.
