Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - Goucher scored twice in the final 21 minutes to break a tie game and defeated Hood College 3-1 in non-conference field hockey action.
The two teams battled through most of the first half scoreless, as the Blazer defense turned away 12 shots on goal by the Gophers. Ying Van Schaik (Easton, Md. / Gunston Day School) had 10 of her 17 saves in the opening half. Emily Richardson (Sykesville, Md. / Century) picked up her fifth defensive save of the year early in the half and Rachel Marlow (Thurmont, Md. / Catoctin) added a diving defensive save later in the period.
Justine Ruhlin, however, broke the scoreless deadlock with just 52 seconds left before the intermission as Goucher led 1-0 at the break.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Hood kept the ball in the circle after a corner and during a loose ball, Rachel Gannon (Church Hill, Md. / Queen Anne's County) directed the ball to Marlow, who boomed a shot home to tie the score at 1-1 with her first career tally.
Ruhlin struck again for Goucher in the 50th minute for the game-winner. Lizzie Barminski got the ball ahead on a breakaway and Ruhlin pulled up at the top the circle and sent a hard shot into the left side of the cage. Barminski scored with an assist from Annie Carter later in the half to put the game out of reach.
Demie Huffman had two saves for Goucher.
Hood welcomes Cedar Crest to Thomas Athletic Field at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 21 for the third game of the team's five-game homestand.
