Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - First half goals by Hood College's Jill Heyman (Hackettstown, N.J. / Warren Hills Regional) and Jessie Herbert (Sykesville, Md. / Century) powered the Blazers to a 2-1 win over visiting Eastern Mennonite University in non-conference women's soccer action.
Heyman scored the match's first goal when Hood was awarded a corner kick in the 11th minute. Samantha Norris (Frederick, Md. / Gov. Thomas Johnson) sent the kick from the right corner to the far post where Heyman was waiting. The freshman's first touch was saved, but she cleaned up her own rebound for the 1-0 lead.
In the 38th minute, Herbert headed a ball in the six-yard box for her team-high third tally of the year and a 2-0 lead at the half.
The Hood defense came within five seconds of the shutout, but Sam Winkler found the back of the net to put the Royals on the scoreboard.
Leah Norris (Bryans Road, Md. / Lackey) made three saves in net for Hood.
The Blazers outsot EMU 9-8 in the game, including 8-3 in the decisive first half. Hood also had six corners, compared to just a pair for Eastern Mennonite.
Becca Borg made two saves in 71 minutes before giving way to Rachel Klainer.
Hood handed the Royals, who entered the game with a 6-1 record, just their second loss of the season.
The Blazers will look to make it two in a row when Gallaudet visits on October 2.
