Galloway, Cameron Cook Shoot Blazers Past Elizabethtown

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Matt Galloway (Sterling, Va. / Potomac Falls) and Cameron Cook (Baltimore, Md. / Calvert Hall) combined for 48 points, hitting six 3-point field goals apiece, in an 85-64 win over Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference play.

The win stretched the Blazers' win streak to five straight, the longest for Hood (8-3, 2-2 Commonwealth) since the 2011-12 season.

Galloway's shooting helped the Blazers build the lead in the first half and Cook's shooting put the game out of reach in the second half.

Hood hit 14-of-29 3-point attempts (48 percent) in the contest. The 14 made threes set a new arena record at BB&T Arena and was the most in a game for the Blazers since making the same number in a win over Penn State-York almost exactly six years ago (January 7, 2008).

Galloway finished 8-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-9 from long range to finish with 25 points. The junior hit all three of his free throw attempts, grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists, and had three steals.

Cook netted 23 points on 7-of-16 shooting, drilling six of his 11 3-point attempts. The senior went 3-of-4 from the foul line and had four boards.

Hood trailed in the early going, 18-15, after a jumper by the Blue Jays' Joe Schwalm with 13:12 left in the first half.

After Asa Smith (Cheltenham, Md. / Paul VI (Va.)) chipped the deficit to 18-16 with a free throw, Galloway was fouled on a 3-point attempt and hit all three free throws for a 19-18 Hood lead with 12:08 to to in the half.

The foul shots were the beginning of an 18-0 back-breaking run that lasted over five minutes and resulted in a 33-18 lead for the Blazers with 6:53 remaining. Galloway had eight points during the flurry, with Cook adding five.

During the run, the Blazers hounded Elizabethtown (4-7, 1-3) into 0-of-5 shooting with six turnovers.

Hood stretched the lead to 47-29 at the half. Galloway had 16 points at the break, hitting 5-of-6 field goals and all three of his attempts from behind the arc. The Blazers turned 15 turnovers in the half into 22 points.

In the second half, Elizabethtown pulled within 14 on two occasions, but each time Cook hit a three to stop the run.

Chris Cook (Mechanicsville, Va. / Lee-Davis) hit a three with 4:45 to go to spark a 12-2 run down the stretch that resulted in an 85-57 advantage with 1:15 on the game clock.

Chris Cook gave Hood three players in double figures with 13 points on 3-of-4 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the line, and had three assists. Justin Bowens (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) had three steals. Trevor Magnuski (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) came off the bench for a career-high seven rebounds.

Andrew Mantz led the Blue Jays with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including a three, and went 2-of-5 from the free throw line. Lee Eckert scored in double figures with a dozen points. He added a game-high nine rebounds.

Hood hit 19-of-26 free throws (73 percent), while Elizabethtown struggled from the charity stripe, connecting on just 17-of-30 (57 percent).

The Blue Jays outrebounded the Blazers 44-36, just the fourth time in 12 games Hood has been outrebounded this season.

Hood returns to action on January 8 for its first away conference game of 2014 against Alvernia University.
