Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Hood College softball team returned to action on their trip to the Dot Richardson Spring Games with wins over Monmouth (Ill.) and Bates.
The Blazers opened the day with a 6-4 come-from-behind win over the Fighting Scots, then notched a 10-1 victory against the Bobcats.
With the results, Hood stands at 6-4 on the year. Monmouth dropped to 7-2 and Bates went to 0-2.
Hood 6, Monmouth (Ill.) 4
The Fighting Scots jumped ahead early with three runs in the top fo the first. Caitlin Lingle opened the scoring with an RBI double and scored on a two-run homer by Emily Watkins.
The Blazers quickly answered in the bottom of the inning when Jess Sedgwick (Fairfield, Conn. / Cushing Academy) ripped an single to drive in Carly Farr (Thurmont, Md. / Catoctin) to make it a 3-1 deficit.
Hood then took advantage of a pair of errors in the second to score four runs. Jackie Wenzel (Wallingford, Pa. / Strath Haven) walked and Hannah Kirk (Frederick, Md. / Governor Thomas Johnson) and Amy Hagerdon (Berryville, Va. / Clarke County) singled to load the bases with one out. Farr drove home a run with a fielder's choice. Errors on the next two plays cleared the bases as the Blazers went ahead 5-3.
A sacrifice fly by Charlotte Park knocked in Kirstyn Ozga to cut the Hood lead to 5-4 in the top of the third.
Hagerdon drove home Wenzel with an RBI single for an insurance run in the sixth.
Jennifer Rutherford (Phoenixville, Pa. / Phoenixville Area) threw five innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win, scattering two hits and a walk. She retired the final 10 batters she faced.
Hagerdon had two hits and a walk in the game. Sedgwick also had two hits. Wenzel doubled, walked, and scored twice. Farr also touched home twice.
Lingle and Kaitlin Winkler had multi-hit days for Monmouth.
Taylor Smith started and took the loss for the Fighting Scots, allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits and two walks in 5.1 innings.
Hood 10, Bates 1
The Blazers scored a season-high 10 runs to stop the Bobcats.
Keerstie Robinson (Windsor, Pa. / Northeastern) limited Bates to seven hits, struck out a season-high five batters, and did not issue a walk.
Hagerdon and Farr led off the game with back-to-back doubles to put Hood on the board in the first before an error and a two-run double by Melissa Canulli (Hummelstown, Pa. / Central Dauphin East) stretched it to 4-0 after one inning.
Katie Jenkins (Duncannon, Pa. / Susquenita) had an RBI single in the second as the Blazers scored three more runs to expand the lead to 7-0.
The Bobcats scored once in the third when Kelsey Freedman doubled to knock in Molly Brown.
Sedgwick ripped an RBI double as part of a two-run fourth for Hood, who went ahead 10-1 after Ashley Fourcade's (Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) sacrifice in the fifth.
Farr had three hits in the contest, doubled, stole two bases, scored three runs, and drove in another. Jenkins had two hits in the game, as well, while Wenzel walked twice.
Hood had the running game working, stealing six bases. In addition to the two steals by Farr, Hagerdon, Sedgwick, Roo Saglimbeni (Woodbine, Md. / Glenelg), and Canulli each swiped a bag.
Freedman was the only player with two hits for Bates.
Brenna Callahan went the distance in the circle for the Bobcats, allowing 10 runs on eight hits and four walks.
