Hood Wraps Up Spring Break with Wins over St. Lawrence, Lancaster Bible

CLERMONT, Fla. - Hood College won a pitchers' duel with St. Lawrence in the first game and the Blazers routed Lancaster Bible in the nightcap on their final day at the Dot Richardson Spring Games.

Hood knocked off the Saints 2-1, then took out the Chargers 9-0. Keerstie Robinson (Windsor, Pa. / Northeastern) and Jennifer Rutherford (Phoenixville, Pa. / Phoenixville Area) each threw complete games and combined to allow just 12 hits and a run, while striking out 10 total batters.

The Blue and Grey went 7-1 over spring break and return with an 8-4 mark overall. St. Lawrence fell to 5-6 and Lancaster Bible moved to 0-7.

Hood 2, St. Lawrence 1

A walkoff single by Amy Hagerdon (Berryville, Va. / Clarke County) scored the winning run in the seventh inning to lift the Blazers to the win.

Robinson notched the win, allowing just one run on seven hits and striking out four.

She outdueled Kyle Plimpton, who struck out 13 and surrendered just six hits and three walks.

Jackie Wenzel (Wallingford, Pa. / Strath Haven) led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk. Hannah Kirk (Frederick, Md. / Governor Thomas Johnson) laid down a sacrifice, but was safe at first on an error to put put two runners on. Hagerdon followed with her second hit of the game that brought around Wenzel for the winning run.

In the top of the first, Aisha O'Connor reached on an error and moved around to third before Nicole Mathews drew a two-out walk. The Saints attempted a double steal, but the return throw from shortstop Carly Farr (Thurmont, Md. / Catoctin) to catcher Ashley Fourcade (Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) cut down O'Connor to end the inning.

Hood struck in the bottom half of the first with its first run. Farr ripped a one-out double and scored on a base hit by Katie Jenkins (Duncannon, Pa. / Susquenita). 

Fourcade retired a potential tying run in the fifth unassisted and Robinson got strike three for the third out with another potential tying run and the go ahead run on base.

St. Lawrence put together three singles in the sixth to tie the game. Leslie Stratton stroked her only hit of the day to lead off the frame, and came home on Cailyn Welsh's single. 

Hagerdon went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and a run batted in. Farr walked in addition to her first inning double, while Jess Sedgwick (Fairfield, Conn. / Cushing Academy) and Wenzel each singled and walked in the game.

Welsh had two hits for the Saints.

Hood 9, Lancaster Bible 0

Rutherford threw a complete game five-hitter and faced just two runners over the minimum over the first six innings.

Hood scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead. Hagerdon led off the game with a double, and a Fourcade single and Sedgwick walk loaded the bases. Jenkins followed with a two-run single.

Melissa Canulli (Hummelstown, Pa. / Central Dauphin East) picked up an RBI with a third inning single to drive in Jenkins, who reached on a fielder's choice.

The Blazers maintained the 3-0 lead until they added two more runs in the fifth. Canulli doubled to start the fifth and came home on a ground out by Hagerdon. Cady Baer (Frederick, Md. / Catoctin) scored the inning's other run, crossing home on an RBI single by Farr.

Hood put together a four-run seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Roo Saglimbeni (Woodbine, Md. / Glenelg) drove in the first run, knocking in Kirk, who had pinch run after a Sedgwick single to start the frame. Jenkins had a bases loaded hit to drive in a run for a 7-0 lead. Hagerdon capped the scoring with a two-run double.

Sedgwick reached base in all four trips to the plate, going 3-for-3 with a walk. Baer also had three hits in the game. Hagerdon doubled twice in five at bats and drove in a pair of runs. Canulli finished 2-for-4 and scored twice. Farr walked and singled.

Rutherford struck out six and did not walk a batter to pick up the win.

Marissa Hardy allowed 15 hits and three walks in seven innings for Lancaster Bible.

Hood travels to Gettysburg for a doubleheader on March 18.
