Cameron Cook Becomes Scoring Leader; Hood Falls in ECAC Championship

Box Score

BETHANY, W.Va. - Cameron Cook (Baltimore, Md. / Calvert Hall) set Hood's all-time scoring record and fellow senior Justin Bowens (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) led the Blazers in scoring, but Juniata shot its way to an 82-67 win in the ECAC Southwest Championship.

In the second half of Saturday night's semifinal, it seemed nearly every shot Hood took found the bottom of the net. But the Blazers found themselves on the other end during the title game as the Eagles shot 17-of-29 from 3-point range.

Cook hit a lay up with 1:38 to pay in the first half to give him 1,634 points, one more than the old school record held by Santo Provenzano. Cook ended the game with 1,643 points.

Hood (18-11) led 4-3 in the opening minutes after Bowens' first score of the game. But back-to-back threes by Brian Scholly - who scored the Eagles' first nine points - sparked a 15-4 run that made it 19-10 after Nate Ogle hit a 3-pointer with 11:31 to go in the first half. The teams traded scores before Dimitri Ross sank consecutive 3-pointers to start another run. Cook's record-setting bucket halted the run and a Bowens hit another lay up to make it 40-23 with a minute to go before the break.

Scholly hit his fourth three of the half before a put back by Reggie Daniels (Abingdon, Md. / Patterson Mill) made it 43-25 at the break.

Scholly and Moss combined for eight threes in the first half as Juniata (18-10) hit 12-of-18 from behind the 3-point line to open the game. Bowens did his best to keep Hood in in the contest with 10 first half points.

The Blazers kept pace during the second half, but could not close the gap.

Bowens hit 6-of-11 field goals on his way to a team-high 16 points. Cook had 13 points, hit three 3-pointers and grabbed four rebounds. Chris Cook (Mechanicsburg, Va. / Lee-Davis) added a dozen points.

In addition to his scoring record, Cameron Cook extended his school record to 97 made threes this season. He ends his career with more 3-pointers, 321, than any other current Division III player. The career mark of 321 threes is a school record.

Hood went 18-of-22 at the free throw line (82 percent), as Bowens, Daniels, and Davon Hill (Clinton, Md. / Potomac School) each went 4-of-4.

Scholly, named the tournament's most valuable player after the game, went 9-of-17 from the field and knocked down six threes on his way to 24 points. Kevin Stapleton added 16 points and Moss chipped in with 13. Lucas Mellott had a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Blazers committed just nine turnovers in the game, but the Eagles hit 57 percent from the floor and 58 percent from distance in the win.

While Hood's normal accuracy from the outside escaped the Blazers, the team attacked the basket more and outscored the Eagles in the paint, 30-18.

Hood won 18 games in 2013-14, second only to the 21 wins of the 2006-07 squad. The Blazers set school records with 254 3-point field goals, 520 free throws made, and 271 steals.
