Messiah Spoils Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College suffered a Commonwealth Conference sweep against Messiah this afternoon.

The wins improved the Falcons to 22-7 and 12-2 in the conference. The Blazers dropped to 13-17 overall with a 1-13 mark in conference play.

Before the games Hood honored the careers of the four seniors: Amy Hagerdon (Berryville, Va. / Clarke County), Katie Jenkins (Duncannon, Pa. / Susquenita), Jackie Wenzel (Wallingford, Pa. / Strath Haven), and Jennifer Rutherford (Phoenixville, Pa. / Phoenixville Area).

Messiah 13, Hood 1 - 5 innings

Sara McKee threw a complete game three-hitter, and Messiah used three big innings to take game one.

In the second inning the Falcons scored five times, Brooke Pompeo had a RBI double to drive in the fourth run. She also scored the fifth run when Amanda Jones stole second and Pompeo crossed the plate on the throw. The Falcons added four runs in both the third and fifth innings.

The Blazers got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth off a Melissa Canulli (Hummelstown, Pa. / Central Dauphin East) RBI ground out. Jenkins singled to start off the inning and advanced to second on a ground out. With Canulli at the plate, Jenkins moved to third on a passed ball.

Rutherford went the distance and allowed 12 hits. Jones and Tina Lehman both had three hits a piece.

Messiah 4, Hood 2

In a pitching duel between Keerstie Robinson (Windsor, Pa. / Northeastern) and Claressa Mees, the Falcons scored the winning run in the sixth and added insurance in the seventh. Both pitchers went the distance and combined for 12 strikeouts, nine for Mees and three for Robinson.

Once again the Falcons got on the board first, this time taking the lead on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Pompeo led off the game with a single and scored when Krista Ammon flied out to center. In the second inning Pompeo doubled the lead with a RBI ground out.

The Blazers tied up the game in the bottom half of the second with a pair of bases-loaded walks. Jenkins singled to left center with one out and moved over to second on a ground out by Laura Lokey (Millville, N.J. / Millville). Wenzel singled to send Jenkins over to third, and two batters later Hannah Kirk (Frederick, Md. / Gov. Thomas Johnson) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hagerdon then walked on four pitches to drive in the first run, and Carly Farr (Thurmont, Md. / Catoctin) battled and drew the walk on a 3-2 pitch.

Pompeo continued her day with a two-out RBI single to take the lead in the sixth. Ammon added another sacrifice fly in the seventh to score Courtney Allen.

Wenzel singled to begin the bottom half of the frame to give Hood hope, but Mees retired the next three batters.

Jenkins and Wenzel both had two hits in three at bats. Becky Notte had a game-high three hits, and Pompeo had two hits and two RBIs. Ammon had two RBIs, and Emily Quatrale had two hits.

The Blazers are back home on April 23 to take on Frostburg State.
