Blazers Outslug Bullets to Salvage Split

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Hood College split its final doubleheader of the year against non-conference foe Gettysburg. The Bullets took game one 17-2 and the Blazers came back to win game two 13-8. 

Gettysburg moved to 20-16 on the year. Hood wraps up the season with a 15-21 record.

The Bullets used a seven-run third inning to take control of game one. Maggie Maguire opened up the scoring in the first inning with a RBI double, scoring Steph Zengel. A three-run double by Zengel capped a four-run second.

The Blazers got on the board in the top of the third with a two-out rally. Amy Hagerdon (Berryville, Va. / Clarke County) doubled to left field to keep the inning going. Carly Farr (Thurmont, Md. / Catoctin) singled her home and Ashley Fourcade (Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) drove Farr home with a double down the left field line. 

With two runs already in and the bases loaded, Zengel hit a two-run single to break open the game in the third. Three more runs would cross the plate for the hosts resulting in a 12-2 lead. The Bullets would add five runs in the fourth as well.

Michelle Fox scattered four hits and stuck out two in four innings. Keerstie Robinson (Windsor, Pa. / Northeastern) only last 2 2/3 innings. Kristin Ganderton (Maple Glen, Pa. / Upper Dublin) pitched 1 1/3 in relief and recorded a strikeout.

Zengel had four hits with five RBIs and Maguire added three each of her own. Emily Hall added three hits and a pair of RBIs. 

Fourcade led Hood with two hits in three at bats with a RBI.

The Blazers used a nine-run sixth inning to complete the comeback and win the season finale. Trailing 6-4 six batters reached before the first out was recorded. Katie Jenkins (Duncannon, Pa. / Susquenita) led off with a double and Roo Saglimbeni (Woodbine, Md. / Glenelg) drove her in with a single. Hannah Kirk (Frederick, Md. / Gov. Thomas Johnson) reached on a single and Jackie Wenzel (Wallingford, Pa. / Strath Haven) tied up the game with a single through the middle. Hagerdon then walked to load the bases, and a wild pitch allowed Kirk to score. 

The first out was finally recorded when Farr reached on a fielder's choice and Wenzel got thrown out a third. Fourcade continued the rally with a RBI single through the right side. Melissa Canulli delivered a bases loaded double to drive in two runs to give Hood a 10-6 lead. Saglimbeni came up again and ripped a two-run triple to right, and scored the final run on a Kirk double. 

The Bullets responded with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth but could not get only closer. 

The Blazers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jess Sedgwick (Fairfield, Conn. / Cushing Academy) drove in Farr, who had reached on a double. Gettysburg scored three times in its turn at bat, tying the game on a double steal in which Melissa Tighe stole home.

Hood retook the lead with a three-run inning of its own in the second. Wenzel connected on a single to score Jenkins, and Hagerdon followed with a RBI double. Farr gave the Blazers a 4-3 lead with a sacrifice fly to score Wenzel. 

The see-saw game continued in the Bullet half of the third with Emily Hall delievering a two run single for the 5-4 lead. The hosts added another run on a Zengel RBI single in the fourth.

Both teams were unable to score in the fifth to set up the deciding sixth inning for the Blazers. 

The Blazers' 18 hits were the most in one game since 22 on March 29, 2013. Kirk and Saglimbeni led the team with three hits apiece. Wenzel, Jenkins, Sedgwick, Farr, and Hagerdon each had two hits. All nine players in the lineup had at least one hit in the game. Saglimbeni drove in three runs, while Canulli and Wenzel had two RBIs each. Eight different players knocked in runs in the victory.

Zengel and Meghan Hisgen each had three hits for the Bullets. Maguire, Hisgen, and Hall all had two RBIs. Fox made the start again and gave up six runs in three innings. Brook Bisner picked up the loss giving up four runs in 3 2/3 innings of relief. 

Jennifer Rutherford (Phoenixville, Pa. / Phoenixville) earned the win, scattering 15 hits in seven innings. She finishes her career with 37 complete games, good for fourth all-time. 

Robinson pitched 16 complete games this year to move into second all-time with 41. 

Hagerdon finishes her career with 157 hits, two short of tying the record of 159 (Sara Wastler, 2006-09). She set the record in career at bats with 486, the previous mark was 484 (Casey Dunn, 2010-13).
