Box Score 2 FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College volleyball team split a tri-match against Catholic and Gwynedd Mercy at BB&T Arena, falling to the Cardinals, 3-0, before beating the Griffins by the same score.
The Blazers improved to 4-10 with the split. Catholic, who defeated Gwynedd Mercy, jumped to 14-1. The Griffins slid to 5-9.
Hayley Rogers (Sandwich, Ill. / Brunswick (Md.)) had 16 kills between the two matches, hitting .364 for the afternoon. She also had six blocks in the two contests. Her 12 kills against Gwynedd Mercy were the most by a Blazer this season.
Catholic 3, Hood 0
Mary Paige Nesfeder had 10 kills and seven aces as Catholic defeated the Blazers 25-11, 25-20 and 20-8.
Brynn Cooley matched Nesfeder's 10 kills.
In the second set, a kill by Ashley Park-Brouse (Myersville, Md. / Middletown) pulled Hood within 18-16, but Catholic won the next three points to put the set out of reach. The Cardinals controlled play in the other two sets to pick up the win.
Rogers and Addie Roop (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) each had four kills for the Blazers. Rogers added a pair of blocks. Brenna Elizondo (Littleton, Colo. / Heritage) led the team with 16 assists. Gabriela Enriquez (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) notched a career-high with 11 digs and Allie Donoghue (Owings, Md. / Bishop McNamara) tied hers with 10. Donoghue also served up two aces.
Nesfeder and Cooley combined for 20 kills and just two errors in 45 attacks to power the Cardinal offense. Michelle Seals added 18 assists and Michelle Bouchard tallied 11 digs.
Hood 3, Gwynedd Mercy 0
Rogers had 12 kills in 23 attempts, and was credited with four blocks to lead the Blazers past Gwynedd Mercy 25-21, 25-23 and 25-20.
With the score tied 19-19 in the first set, Elizabeth Hawkesworth (Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill) had three kills and assisted on a block with Molly Kelly (Frederick, Md. / St. John's Catholic Prep) as part of a 5-1 stretch that put Hood ahead 24-20.
Hood led 24-19 in the second, but the Griffins battled off four consecutive set points before the Blazers could extend the lead to 2-0.
Gwynedd Mercy jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead in the third set. Donoghue and Rogers had two points apiece during an 8-1 run that tied the score at 11-11. The Blazers still trailed 15-14 before back-to-back kills by Donoghue capped a 6-1 run that resulted in a 20-16 lead. Later, Gwynedd Mercy survived one match point before setter Kathryn Jones (Newfane, N.Y. / Newfane) dumped the ball over the net to finish off the victory.
Rogers hit .478 to spark an attack that featured eight kills by both Roop and Hawkesworth. Hawkesworth added two blocks and was one of three Hood players in double figures with 13 digs. Kelsey Ritner (Barnegat, N.J. / Barnegat) had a team-high 17 of the Blazers 76 digs in the match, and Kari Betson (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) added 14. Jones dished out 17 assists and had two blocks.
Kasey Loring led all players with 13 kills for Gwynedd Mercy. Martin added 23 assists and 11 digs. Laura Kirk had a match-high 25 digs.
Hood travels to Penn State-Harrisburg on September 22.
