Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Hood College women's soccer team went to extra time for the third time in four matches this season, falling on a penalty kick in the 109th minute against Eastern Mennonite, 4-3.
The match looked like it was headed for a draw, tied at 3-3 before Morgan Hill was awarded a penalty kick and converted at 108:11.
Hood trailed 2-1 at the half before Jessie Herbert (Sykesville, Md. / Century) scored twice in just over a 12 minute span in the second half. The junior broke free up the right side and shot across the net to knot the score at 2-2 in the 51st minute with an assist from Jill Heyman (Hackettstown, N.J. / Warren Hills Regional). In the 73rd minute, Herbert sailed a ball over the keeper's fingers on a direct kick for the lead and her third career multi-goal match. She has three goals over the past two matches.
Nora Osei and Hill connected on a weak side header in the 80th minute to tie the match and send it to overtime. Hood had four shots in the extra periods, but were not able to convert.
Just one of the Blazers' four contests this year has been settled in 90 minutes, including a tilt with the Royals that featured six ties or lead changes.
Hood came out of the gates with an eighth minute goal by Alyssa Nubgaard (Poolesville, Md. / Poolesville, Md. / Poolesville) for a 1-0 lead. Amanda Reigner (Westminster, Md. / Liberty) crossed the ball to the freshman, who boomed a shot home from the top of the box.
EMU scored twice before the half to claim a 2-1 lead at the intermission. Sierra Martin tied the score in the 16th minute and Osei notched the first of her two goals in the 34th minute off an assist from Hill.
Alexis Andrukat (Smithsburg, Md. / Smithsburg) made one save in net for the Blazers.
Becca Borg stopped three shots for the Royals.
Hood held a 15-12 advantage in shots and was awarded 10 corner kicks, compared to just four for Eastern Mennonite.
The Blazers travel to Wesley on September 9.
