Box Score READING, Pa. - Hood College gave up its fewest points since February 2013 as the Blazers picked up a 58-53 win over Alvernia in Commonwealth Conference action.
Chris Cook (Mechanicsville, Va. / Lee-Davis) led Hood with 16 points and four steals. Davon Hill (Clinton, Md. / Potomac School) went 3-of-6 from 3-point range and dished out five assists. James Brown (Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Country Day) made his first start of the year and scored a career-high 10 points. Trevor Magnuski (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) had a career-high 11 rebounds, along with eight points and three assists. Malik Harris (Columbia, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) had three steals off the bench.
Cook hit a 3-pointer with 3:22 left in the first half to put Hood on top 24-17, but the Crusaders closed the gap to just 24-23 at the break.
Alvernia took a 29-26 lead on a three by Alex Shippen, but a 3-pointer by Hill tied the score and started a Blazer run. Magnuski scored six points and six different Hood players found the bottom of the net during a 14-0 run, resulting in a 43-29 lead with 14:24 remaining.
The Crusaders responded with a run over their own, outscoring Hood 18-5 to pull within 48-47 with under six minutes to play. Lamont Clark would tie the score at 52-52 with 3:18 left, but Brown tipped in his own miss to put the Blazers back on top, 54-52 at 2:28. Field goals by Magnuski and Hill in the final 1:36 sealed the victory.
Harrison Deyo had 15 points and nine rebounds for Alvernia. Clark and Mike Miller added 12 each. Clark had five assists and four steals in the game. Charles Cooper also had five assists, and came down with seven rebounds.
The Crusaders used just six players in the game, but had 18 assists on 20 made field goals.
The two teams combined to shoot just 13 free throws in the contest.
Hood held a 41-34 advantage on the glass.
The Blazers, 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the Commonwealth Conference, head to Widener on January 10.
