Volleyball Falls in Tri-Match to Stevenson, Lycoming

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Hood College volleyball team dropped matching 3-1 finals to Stevenson and Lycoming in a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth tri-match.

Set scores against the Mustangs were 25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 25-13. Against the Warriors, scores were 25-12, 23-25, 29-27, 25-12. 

Elena Young (Hagerstown, Md. / South Hagerstown) had 30 total kills in the tri-match. Brenna Elizondo (Littleton, Colo. / Heritage) notched 36 digs between the two matches, while Payton Belella (Smithsburg, Md. / Smithsburg) added 67 assists and 23 digs.

Belella became just the third player in school history to top 600 assists in a season. Young and Kari Betson (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) surpassed the 200-kill mark for the year.

STEVENSON 3, HOOD 1

Annika Schwartz had 17 kills and just one error to lead the Mustangs to a four-set victory. 

Young and Betson notched 12 kills apiece to lead the Blazers. Elizondo had a season-high 21 digs. Belella tallied 29 assists and 10 digs. 

Hood jumped ahead 5-2 in the first set and trailed just 14-13 midway through the set. Karin Schleimer served up a pair of aces during a 7-0 run for Stevenson that took control of the set. After the Mustangs carried their momentum to a win in the second set, they took a 13-12 lead in set three before back-to-back kills by Young put Hood ahead. The freshman scored kills for the final two points of the set to bring the Blazers within 2-1. Hood held an early 4-2 lead in the fourth set, but Stevenson used a 10-point run to claim a 12-4 lead and never looked back. 

Kristen Brooks added 13 kills for the Mustangs. Sara Bollinger dished out 45 assists. Schleimer led all player with five service aces, while Deanna Bradbury had 20 digs.

LYCOMING 3, HOOD 1

Young's match-high 18 kills were not enough as the Warriors won in four sets.

Belella handed out 38 assists and added 13 digs for her second double-double of the day. Elizondo led five Blazers in double figures with 15 digs. Kelsey Ritner (Barnegat, N.J. / Barnegat) added 14, Kathryn Jones (Newfane, N.Y. / Newfane) had 14 and Betson notched 10. 

After Lycoming cruised to a first set victory, Hood trailed 21-20 in the second set before three straight attack errors by the Warriors put the Blazers in front. Young evened the match with a pair of kills to finish the set. 

Hood had one set-point in the third set before Lycoming scored twice for a 25-24 lead. The Blazers fought off three set-points until Tayler Whitman's kill gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead in the match. 

Lauren Fink and Bethany Richardson had 13 kills apiece to lead Lycoming. Kristine Jahn and Whitman tallied 10 each. Catherine Burger had a match-high 43 assists and Emily Hepner led all players with 28 digs. Cheyenne Altland had five blocks, while Richardson notched four.

Hood travels to Lebanon Valley on October 13.
