Hood Drops Non-Conference Match to Shenandoah

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College volleyball team fell in three sets to visiting Shenandoah.

Scores were 26-24, 25-19, 25-16.

Payton Belella (Smithsburg, Md. / Smithsburg) finished with 22 assists, leaving her two shy of Robin Deniker's season record of 752 set in 2000. Elena Young (Hagerstown, Md. / South Hagerstown) had 11 kills and three blocks. She now has 250 kills on the year, just the fourth time in school history a player has had as many; and the first time since 2007.

Brenna Elizondo (Littleton, Colo. / Resurrection) had 12 digs and two aces.

Hood trailed 22-16 in the first set, but after a timeout ran off six straight points to tie it up. After two errors by the Hornets, kills by Kathryn Jones (Newfane, N.Y. / Newfane) and Young bookended two aces by Elizondo. Shenandoah called timeout after Young's kill and managed to hold off Hood for the win. In the second set, the Blazers fell behind 14-7 and again tried to mount a comeback. Back-to-back kills by Young brought Hood within 16-15, before a 9-4 run by the Hornets closed the set. Ahead 2-0 in the match, Shenandoah took control of the third set from the beginning to close out the the three-set sweep. 

For Shenandoah, Anna Gallup had 13 kills and Allie Pieper added 11. Rachel Roberts had five blocks, while Gallup and Pieper each tallied four.

Hood is back in action on Thursday, October 22 when the Blazers head to Lancaster Bible for a tri-match that features Wesley.
