Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. - Hood College freshman Payton Belella (Smithsburg, Md. / Smithsburg) tied the school record for assists with 52 in a win over Eastern Mennonite as the Blazers split a pair of matches played at Catholic.
Set scores in the win against EMU were 23-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-18. Against the Cardinals, Hood fell 25-12, 25-10, 25-21.
Belella tied the school record set by Robin Deniker in 2000. With 77 total assists on the day, she became the first Blazer to reach 900 in a career and already ranks fourth in a career at Hood.
Elena Young (Hagerstown, Md. / Hagerstown) was on the receiving end of many of Belella's assists with 22 kills against Royals, tying for the fourth highest single match total in Hood history. For the day, Young had 33 kills. She now has 314 for the year, just the second time in school history a player has had over 300 in a season.
Hood now has 16 wins on the year, the most since winning 19 in the 2000 season.
HOOD 3, EAST. MENNONITE 1
Young and Kari Betson (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) combined for 41 kills to lead Hood during Belella's record-setting performance.
Hood tied the school record with a total of 64 kills in the match.
Kathryn Jones (Newfane, N.Y. / Newfane) added nine kills and 22 digs, while Young and Courtney Hutchinson (Burtonsville, Md. / Blake) had two blocks each. Betson finished with a double-double with 19 kills and 14 digs. Brenna Elizondo (Littleton, Colo. / Heritage) notched 14 digs.
Maria Yoder led the Royals with 12 kills. Jasmine Johnson dished out 43 assists. Katie Miller tallied 34 digs.
CATHOLIC 3, HOOD 0
Hood could not keep the momentum going as the Cardinals defended their home court.
Young added 11 kills and a block. Belella distributed 25 assists and Elizondo had 14 digs.
Maria Cristina Juelle led Catholic with 14 kills and had just one attack error in 19 attempts. Michelle Seals had 27 assists. Michelle Bouchard led the team with 15 digs.
Hood hosts Goucher on Senior Night on October 27 at 7 p.m.
