FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's swim team won 10 of the 11 events in a 123-79 win over visiting Lycoming in a Middle Atlantic Conference dual meet.
Briana Hand-Solomon (Dover, Del. / Dover) and Ashley Griffin (Littlestown, Pa. / Delone Catholic) each won three times, while Brittany Whitham (Fort Collins, Colo. / Resurrection Christian), Shannon McHale (Hauppage, N.Y. / Hauppage), Lauren Fogarty (Arnold, Md. / Broadneck) and Sarah Elkhoga (Pasadena, Md. / Chesapeake) all won twice.
Hand-Solomon, Griffin and Whitham all won twice individually, while Hand-Solomon and Griffin added a win as part of a relay.
Whitham swept the distance freestyle events, winning the 1,000- and 500-yard events. She won the 1,000 in 12:09.23, barely one second faster than teammate Sydney Langer (Falls Church, Va. / Falls Church) who finished second in 12:10.86. She turned in a time of 5:45.72 to win by less than a second in the 500.
Then senior nearly had a third individual victory, but was defeated by Hand-Solomon in the 200 free. The freshman had the winning time of 2:06.59, while Whitham swam a 2:08.57 for second. Hand-Solomon's other individual win came in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.02.
Griffin, making her season debut, won the sprint freestyle events. The junior touched the wall over a second and a half faster than the runner-up in the 50 free with her time of 25.56. In the 100, she won by just four-tenths of a second in 56.47.
McHale won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:03.64. She was second in the 100 back in 1:05.59.
Fogarty's time of 2:22.45 was good for the win in the 200-yard individual medley. In the 100-yard breaststroke, she was second in 1:13.98.
Anne Lessard (Natick, Mass. / Natick) was second to Griffin in the 50 free with a time of 27.14.
Hood won both relay events. The Blazers opened the meet in the 200 medley with a time of 1:59.19 by McHale, Fogarty, Elkhoga and Lessard. In the final event of the day, Hand-Solomon, Langer, Elkhoga and Griffin combined for a 1:46.69.
The Blazers will look to stay in the win column on November 7 with a quad meet at Messiah with Widener and FDU-Florham.
