Box Score CHESTER, Pa. - The Hood College volleyball team ran into a hot-hitting Widener squad in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth First Round, falling in three sets.
Scores were 25-14, 25-26, 25-20.
While the Blazers hit a very respectable .200 in the match, the Pride finished at .366 for the evening and will advance to Wednesday's semifinals.
Elena Young (Hagerstown, Md. / South Hagerstown) led Hood with 10 kills and just a single attack error in 24 attempts. Kathryn Jones (Newfane, N.Y. / Newfane) added eight kills. Payton Belella (Smithsburg, Md. / Smithsburg) dished out 26 assists and had two service aces. Caroline Kinna (Frederick, Md. / Walkersville) had 10 digs.
It was not enough to overcome Widener's trio of Kierston Forney, Janie Kalinock and Nicole Dorman. The three players combined for 34 kills and just three errors, hitting .554 as a group. Forney and Dorman had 12 kills apiece. Sabrina Barbieri was the beneficiary of their hitting, tallying 38 assists.
Hood trailed just 11-8 in each of the first two sets before the Pride pulled away. In the third set, a kill by Jones tied the score at 15-15, but a 5-0 run by Widener sealed the match.
With the loss, Hood (20-14) will await word on a potential bid to the ECAC South Championships.
